I have just bought a new computer with Windows 10 and have a previously working Photosmart 8250 Printer which the new computer wil not write to. I have found on this forum instructions hoe to manually install the printer (pasted below) When I get to step 11 there is no option for DOT4_001 only LPT1 (and 2 and 3); Com 1-4 ; file;
portpropmt and USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB)
Which should I use?
The HP Photosmart 7550 can indeed be used with Windows 10 and with Windows 8.1 for that matter. You just have to manually install the printer and use the compatible driver that is built into Windows.
Here's how. Just follow this simple step by step procedure and your printer will be up and running very quickly.
- Plug in the printer and connect it to your computer
- Turn it on
- Right click the start button and click the following:
- Control Panel
- Devices and Printers
- Add a printer
- Click The printer that I want isn’t listed
- Add a local printer with Manual Settings
- Next
- Use an existing port
- DOT4_001 (HP Print Device)
- Next
- Under Manufacturer Select HP
- Under Printers Choose HP Photosmart 7520 series Class Driver
- Next
- Select Use the Driver that is currently installed or replace current driver (it doesn’t matter which)
- Next
- Printer Name appears click next
- Do not share this printer
- Next
- Print a test page
- Close
- Finish

Use the USB001: port, assuming you are using a USB cable to attach the printer.

Thanks for your reply.
We have actually decided to 'get modern' and buy a WiFi enabled printer as a better alround solution to our households printing needs
When I returned at the weekend to try this I could not see which port was the usb001 port as they didnot seem to be labeled.

The USB001: port is not a particular port you plug into - it is the first USB port the computer assigns. You can plug the USB cord into any of the ports on the computer. You would then want to go to the Devices and Printers folder, right click on the printer, Printer Properties, Ports, and then select the highest numbered USB00n: port - it may be USB001:, USB002: or more depending how many usb devices are connected.
I do prefer network based printers, it is more convenient for me and allows printing from any of the computers in the house.
