I'm getting so frustrated with my Envy 4500!  Ink was low, so I purchased a new HP 61xl cartridge from Walmart, for twice the price of a remanufactured cartridge, but I figured for $30 I wouldn't have any issues.  I purchased it from Walmart, so I'm not worried about it being a knockoff cartridge.

BUT, even though I bought the genuine HP cartridge for twice the price, the printer won't recognize it!  I have done everything suggested in the troubleshooting section of this website, more than once.  I can't return the cartridge because my daughter's boyfriend threw out the outer box when he installed it for me, but kept the inner wrappings, go figure.  I'm *this close* to throwing this printer out on the driveway!

Please help me get this problem solved, I've had things I've needed to print for four days now and I'm getting so fed up!  Why does HP even have this feature of trying to detect counterfeit cartridges when other printers let you install a cartridge and go without problems??

Hi, so I take it this was a genuine HP (not a Remanufactured one). What is the warranty ends date on the cartridge? (YYYY/MM/DD)

Yes, genuine HP cartridge.  The date on the cartridge is 2015/10/02 Y.

I am on my third trip from Staples to find that once again, ENVY won't accept the cartridge I have purchased.

First, I was sold at cartridge for a HP4500 printer. I assume because this is an ENVY, the 901  wasn't acceptable.

However, there was nothing to indicate that on the packaging.

Because the package is open and the cartridge placed in the printer it isn't returnable.

Then I bought a HP61X and the message  was of "another generation."

Now I have another HP61 and it refuses to recognize.

This is just an ordinary printer, it is nothing special, except that in all the printers I have owned, none was this particular.

I  decided since there doesn't seem to be a way I can override this printer system even though I am using HP cartridges that fit just fine into the printer, I will save money by ordering another kind of printer from another manufacturer.

I have already spent over $100 for cartridges plus the inconvenience of a deadline for which I need the color ink;  we all know that there is another printer for sale (probably for less) that will be no worse and no better than the ENVY.

This is a crazy printer.  I have purchased new cartrides, manufactured refurbished, I miss my old printer... never had so many ink issues in my life.  This one sucks.  It recognized the refurbished and about 10 prints later it completely rejected it.  Telling me to remove it.  I have to run my printer in single cartridge mode.  I purchased a new black not refurbished and the printer said it was conterfeit and that the original cartridge was emptied. It pops up with warnings about me using conterfeit cartridges that are all purchased at a retailer, same place that I bought the dang thing.  It needs to stop this. I paid $100 bucks, and my last $40 epson printer was 100 times better than this.  Come on HP - Please update this printer and let your customers print for goodness sake!

Envy 4500 won't accept new 61XL cartridge.  Says it is incompatible.  Help!!!

Sorry, TomLynn, there doesn't seem to be a fix for it, nor is HP willing to help on the issue.  Your best bet is to take a sledgehammer to the defective HP product that they are not willing to stand behind, and go with a brand that is willing to put customers first.

A friend has just developed the same issue as the OP.  I've been searching all week for an answer.  Sadly, this thread has no solutions.  Guess I'll go start yet another HP board forum posting this problem.

the problem may be two-fold:

1.  your HP printer is progrmmed to use onl certain HP61 ink cartirdges, make sure you're using "second generation" artridges. Unfortunately, first & second generation cartridges look identical.

2.  your HP printer is programmed (a) to keep track of the  cartridge's encoded serial number.  It won't let you use a home refilled one and some commercially refilled ones.  The HP "recyling" program is practially BS. HP business perspectus for investers [points out the 90% of the Imaging Division (printers) profit comes from Ink sales;  (b) some HP printers "lock"  the cartridge so that it cannot be used on one of your other printers (even of the same model #). the HP claim that refilled used ink cartridges can damage your printer is true... but, you have a better chance at winning the PowerBall lottery.

Summary:  HP sucks!
