I have a HP 4500 desktop. Often when i get a "new" cartridge, i face this problem. It usually resolves by

- gently cleaning the cartridge contact points (golden ribbon area basically)

- turning the printer On-Off a few times

its pretty random but works often

Thank you for the selfserving message "A study by QualityLogic found that almost 1/6 refilled cartridges were Dead on Arrival (DOA) and 70% of refills they tested had some form of reliability problem."  It is very easy to control the results of any survey depending on who you ask the question of and in the case of the above the cartridges used for the test were just about guaranteed to be "Online Junk."  The simple fack is that there are a lot of quality remanufacturers that produce cartridges equal to or better than original HP cartridges and with up to 5 times as much ink, but HP does not want you to know that.  They have also been known to tell callers to support that using a compatible cartridge will void your warranty... that is also not true.  There is a federal law that prevents HP and other manufacturers from doing that, but they will still you the "Lie" anyway.

If HP would sell their cartridges at a reasonable cost companues like ours would be out of business overnight.  If they would allow us to make even a modes profit selling Original HP cartridges we would sell them, but you only lose money when you sell their cartridges with the 5 or 6% profit margfin that they allow us.

ANSWER:  Buy a brother and get lots more ink for much less.

The Quality Logic study was NOT a survey.  They purchased 208 cartridges from the leading refill/remanufacturers and 60 HP cartrdiges.  All the cartrdiges were bought through standard retail channels.

From the study:  "the refilled cartridge test sample included cartridges from the following:

Branded Refilled Cartridges

  • Elite Image
  • Innovera
  • Nukote
  • Office Depot
  • OfficeMax
  • Rhinotek

Refill Service Providers

  • Cartridge World
  • OfficeMax
  • Walgreens"
