M177fw
Unknown Mac OS

Hello.   I have a Hp Color Laserjet pro M177fw until about three weeks ago it would print double sided no problems.  I have used this printer on my pc and now my mac with no problems previously.  I am running a Macbook Pro (less then six months old) which is running 10.10.1 (Yosemite).  I attend college and I know at the end of last quarter during finals week (Dec. 15th) I still had the ability to do 2 sided printing.  Sometime between then and the new quarter starting last monday I lost the ability to do 2 sided printing.  After scouring the internet I have tried everything they suggest:

  • Uninstalling printer and reinstalling
  • resetting the printer setting on the mac and then reinstalling printer
  • resetting the printer settings on mac, rebooting and then reinstalling printer
  • installing older drivers( hp automatically installs newest drivers even if you use an older driver file)
  • resetting physical printer to factory default and reconnecting to wireless network.
  • repairing the disk permissions

The only new software I have installed on the computer in the last three weeks is Adobe Creative Cloud and the printing problem preexisted that installation.

I know they released an update for hp printers on macs today but it hasn't fixed the problem I still do not have the ability to do double sided printing.

Hi @Arboria9 ,

I see that you are experiencing issues printing two-sided from Yosemite. I would like to help you resolve this issue.

You have pretty much have done all the steps that I would have provided.

Are you still able to print two-sided from the Windows computer?

Are you missing the option to select two-sided printing in the print driver?

Check the driver name that is installed for the printer. Make sure it shows just the printer's name.
Click the Apple menu and then click System Preferences. Click Printers & Scanners, highlight the printer name on the left side and on the right side of the screen it should show the printer's name. (Officejet 6500)

If the full printer name isn't listed correctly, delete it and add the printer name back in from the list. Click the - sign to delete the driver and then click the + sign to add the driver, might have to click the drop down to select the printer's name to add it in.

How was the printer name listed?

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

Have a great day!
Thank You.

Yes I can print double sided from a windows pc without any difficulty.  When I give the command to print and it opens the print options two sided printing is greyed out and I can not select it.  The printer name shows as Hp Color Laserjet Pro MFP M177.

Help I still can't print double sided.

Hi Arboria9 ,

Sorry to hear that you are still unable to print two-sided.

Sounds like maybe the Apple update is the driver installed instead of the Full Software drivers from HP, since the two-sided is greyed out.

Here is a document to fully uninstall the HP Software and to uninstall the Apple Update Software also. Just to make sure everything is removed. Uninstalling the Printer Software.

You will have to follow the 10.9 documentation.

Here is the link for the drivers, run a clean installation again please. Make sure the proper printer name is showing again in the Printers and Scanners window. HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M176/M177 Series Software.

Please let me know the outcome.

Thank You.

Hi Arboria9 ,

Sorry to hear that didn't work.

I installed the Color Laserjet pro M177fw as a USB connection on our Lab running Yosemite and had the option to select two-sided.

Then I installed the Color Laserjet pro M177fw  as a Wireless connection and the two-sided was greyed out.

Very odd.

Instead of clicking on the Layout in the dropdown, select the Manual Duplex option, you should be able to select the settings there.

Let me know the results.

Thank You.

Which settings do I select? Or is it that selecting manual duplex will give me the same effect as two-sided printing?

HP Recommended

Hi Arboria9 ,

Yes, you should see the Manual Duplex option available from the list when the printer is networked. Select it and make your changes.

If the issue continues, please try the following:

Repair the Disk Permissions on the Mac:

Close all applications.

On the Apple menu bar, click Go, click Applications and then click Utilities.

Double-click Disk Utility.

Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left.

Click Verify and then Repair Disk Permissions.

Restart the computer..

Reset the Printing System:

Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.

Click the Apple icon and then click System Preferences.

Click Printers & Scanners.

Right-click (or Ctrl +click) in the left white side panel, then click Reset printing system.

Click OK to confirm the reset.

Type the correct Name and Password.

Click OK to reset the printing system.

Then click the + sign to add the driver, highlight the printer. (you might have to click the drop down to select the printer's name) Then click on the Add button.

Hope that helps.

Thank You.
