Officejet 6500 wireless all-in

This was preceded by an error message weeks ago claiming a paper jam which did not exist. Then not working at all with black ink but colors OK. Then after 8 or 9 tries and no clue why -- it worked fine with both a 3rd party XL black cartridge and small std HP cartridge nearly out of ink.  Printed 40 or more pages over 3 week period.  Had some wierd clunking noises but worked.    Now it won't power off, responds to NO input (such as Setup, OK, X for xancel or the power button.)

YET IT WILL PRINT from the pc just fine.   The "Please Wait ...Printer Preparation cannot be interrupted" message is perpetual, never stops. Eventually the lit screen goes off but if you look close the message still scrolls across the little screen.

At some point I saw a message warning about horrible consequiences if one pulls the plug.  I have inspected ALL paper paths & there are no bloackages, the thing works fine, the message willnto die and I cannot turn it off.  Considering a sledge hammer until I found out that what I paid $149 for in 2010 is now priced over $600 which is utterly absurd.
