This is a newly installed 8740. I can't print a Test Page from Printer icon on Prointers page, I can't print anything from Excel unless I run it in Administrator mode (I get a network connection popup error). But I can print from Windows Explorer. Go figure.
I have tried turning off Windows Firewall, problem remains.
My computer has Vipre security software. On another computer, I just installed 8740 driver and all is fine.
Both computers belong to a Hone Group.

Hi @gpaetz,
Good Day. Thanks for reaching out to the HP community. I understand that you need assistance regarding issues printing from the computer. I will be really glad to assist you here.
Commendable description and troubleshooting of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
- Did this happen after a software update or operating system update?
Please try these steps:
- Please disable User account control and check if you are able to print. Please check this link on how to do it.
- Please do not click on any add, image, link or anywhere else on the page as this is a third party link which is used only to follow instructions or screenshots mentioned in it.
- Then check if the printer works fine.
- If it does not please disable the antivirus and firewall and check if it works.
If the issue continues, please uninstall the printer completely from these steps:
- In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
- Select your HP printer.
- Select Uninstall.
- In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
- In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
- Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
- Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
- Click on Drivers tab.
- Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
- Select OK.
- Remove all instances of the same.
- Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
- Close Devices and Printers.
- Then reinstall the full feature software from this link: http://hp.com/drivers please select correct operating system and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Then check if this does the trick for you.
Please note that the issue is not with the printer as it works fine on a different computer.
Finally, if nothing works, please backup all your files and reinstall windows back to factory settings from and reinstall the printer software. This should do the trick for you.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care now and have a superb week ahead. 🙂
