Hi

I have a HP B210a with the bonjour name tureskrivare. Sometimes when I power up the printer it is not reachable from anny device on my network. I tried to investigate what goes wrong. It seems as the printer gets expected ip address from my router. However sometimes in bonjour it claims to have a zeroconf address from the 169.254.0.0 range.

In a terminal window i run the command:

> dns-sd -G v4v6 tureskrivare.local

Then I turn on and off the printer repeatedly, each time waiting for the service to be removed before turning on the printer. Most of the time I get in the terminal window:

10:43:14.326  Add    2  7 tureskrivare.local.                    10.0.1.6                                    120

10:44:23.415  Rmv    0  7 tureskrivare.local.                    10.0.1.6                                    0

Which means that the printer seems to advertise services with the correct address.

Now and then, lets say one out of five times, the printer advertises services with the wrong address (zeroconf address) and immediately  (in a few seconds) corrects it's self:

12:59:55.492  Add     2  4 tureskrivare.local.                    169.254.144.112                              120

13:00:03.316  Rmv     1  4 tureskrivare.local.                    169.254.144.112                              0

13:00:03.316  Add     2  4 tureskrivare.local.                    10.0.1.6                                     120

But then occasionally it ends up advertise services with the wrong address without correcting it's self.

The Add and Rmv pairs corresponds to power on respectivly off:

13:18:07.168  Add     2  4 tureskrivare.local.                    169.254.144.112                              120

13:25:45.284  Rmv     0  4 tureskrivare.local.                    169.254.144.112                              0

13:27:02.315  Add     2  4 tureskrivare.local.                    10.0.1.6                                     120

13:31:59.100  Rmv     0  4 tureskrivare.local.                    10.0.1.6                                     0

When the printer has advertised services with a zeroconfig ip address it becomes unreachable for printing, scaning and so on. It still answers on ping 10.0.1.6 or if you use Safari and type 10.0.1.6 as URL that works to. The console on the printer also claims that the IP address is 10.0.1.6.

So the solution to restart everything only works lets say 6 out of 7 times.... The best solution I have found is to give the printer a manual ip address from a set of reserved address on my LAN that the DHCP server do not deal out.

My question is if there is any proper solution on this? My router is a Airport Extreme version 7.6.8.

The B210a is version TAL1FN1622AR

Other devices: iPad 9.3.5, 2 X iPad 10.2.1, 2 X MacBook Pro 10.11.6, iMac 10.12.3, 2 X iPhone 10.2.1. I also have a PC but during all the tests it has not been turned on, wonder why?

Does the printer have a robust connection: The printer is in the same room as the router and I live in a villa, hence neighbors routers are not close. The printer is saying that the radio signal is 5/5. I have checked this issue since I believe that one thing in play here is the time it takes before an DHCP answer is obtained.

Using systeminformation in my mac and scanning for other wi-fi:s there is a another router on the same channel that might disturb, it is Signal: -86 dBm and my router is Signal: -43 dBm. I will change this so that no channel overlap exists with any other router that i can hear. However the connection is otherwise very robust to all my devices.

@foofee,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out.

I understand that you get a message that the IP address is wrong for your HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One Printer - B210a.

This issue could occur if the router is far from the printer or the firmware is not updated.

And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection

Let me know how that works.

I hope you have a good day ahead.

Hi

Thanks for the input.

Quite early on in my process trying to solve my problem with a printer which now and then became unreachable i checked that it had the latest software. Going through the product update process the printer claims:

"Your printer has the most current updates installed. There are no new updates available at this time"

My router also has the latest software.

Also note that the printer gets the correct address. It has no problem maintaining the wifi connection. The problem is that it advertises another address then what it actually has. This causes all my devices to try to contact the printer on this erronous address which fails.

The printer is 5 meters (15 feet) from the router and in the same room. It claims that the signal is 5 out of 5. If you run the wifi test it finds no error, everything is exelent when it comes to wifi quality.

Another description of my problem without digging into bonjour and whats going on in the network is:

Aproximatly one time out of seven when i power on my B210a it is not reachable from any of my devices such as iPhones, iPads nor Macs trying to print or scan. If you look at the printer and it's display all looks fine. If you run the wifi test it comes out exelent without any problems.

As i mentioned in my original post assigning a manual ip address fixed the problem.
This is also mentioned as step 11 under the link you mentioned:
Step 11: Assign a manual IP address to your printer

However I would like to not need "fixes" in my network. It will only cause problems in the future and add to the work maintaining the network.

best regards
/Ture

@foofee,

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the issue resolved after assigning the static IP address.

Please note that the router has the ability to change the IP address based on the usage. However, now since the static IP has been assigned manually, it will not change and you will not face any issues in future.

Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

I hope you have a good day ahead.

Hi

Thanks for your input.

"Please note that the router has the ability to change the IP address based on the usage."

This is true. However that is not the issue. The DHCP process works fine every time. The printer gets a proper address. Even if the address handed out next time would be another is that not a problem nore the issue here.

It is the next step that goes wrong. Once the printer has a address next step is to use Bonjour to broadcast on the LAN that there now is available this exelent printer with all these services such as printer, scanner and so on. The message broadcasted contains information about the services such as ip address and so forth. It is in this phase it goes wrong sometimes. The address contained in the broadcast message is wrong. It is an address a device normaly assign to an interface if it doesn't get any answer from a DHCP server. It comes from a range of addresses reserved for this purpous, 169.254.0.0, some times called a zeroconf address.

Broadcasting on the LAN that it's available on the address 169.254.144.112 causes all my other devices to try to reach the printer on this address. This doesn't work due to a number of reasons one being that the address the printer has is actualy 10.0.1.6, i.e. the one it got from my router.

@foofee,

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that your router is broadcasting the IP address that starts with 169.

This issue could occur if IPv6 is enabled on the router and HP printer does not support it.

Please follow the step 6 provided below to disable IPv6 in this link: http://hp.care/2eD28wi

I hope you have a good day ahead.

Hi

Thanks for the input

Step 6: Other things to try

Disable IPv6 (network connection)

Select Enable IPv4 only (or similar).

This is not possible since Photosmart Plus B210a only supports IPv4. There is nowhere to disable IPv6.
