Hi Progressive1,

 

I am linking a troubleshooting guide for the problem you are experiencing.  Click Here  Be sure to disconnect all cables from the printer except for the power cord.  Let me know if this helps.

Take a look at the following link.  Click Here  Try doing the steps in the link even though the screen is light instead of dark.  Does this help?

It is on the brightest setting but it is still too dim for me.

Do I simply have to live with this?

Did you peel the plastic cover off of the front screen? Sometimes this gets left on and the icons seem too dim or cannot be seen clearly.

I was experiencing the same issue. I unplugged from my surge protector and replugged in. That seems to have solved the problem. i also downloaded the hp tool to detect problems.

The display can not be read. It is completly white. If you look on about a 45 degree angle, you can see a slight image but it is not clear and virtually unable to read. Is there an adjustment for the screen such as an external control that can be used to control brightness where you can see the screen display?
