print files from a flash drive using printer's usb port. How do you do this?

Are you trying to print a document or an image? This model printer supports the printing of photos from a flash drive.

To know how, kindly refer to page 26 of the User guide.

I am trying to print a document from a flash drive. If this printer will print photos from a flash drive, why not documents? seems strange.

You may plug in the flash drive and go to print on the printer screen to check the available options.

This printer only supports printing JPEG format, not PDF or Word from the flash drive.

This is as per the printer specifications.
