The buttons to push in the solution by the HP employee are incorrect. Close but incorrect. Here are the correct buttons to push.
Steps:
- Power Button + Cancel Button Combo
- Enter special key combo 1[Scan] 3[Copy Color] 2[Copy Black]
- ‘Support menu’ will be displayed
- Press the 2[Copy Black] until the display shows ‘Reset Menu’
- Press the OK button once
- Press the 2[Copy Black] until the display shows ‘Semi-Full reset’
- Press the OK button once
- The printer will go off and will power on by itself, else wait for 20 seconds and power on the Printer
Note:
All user settings will be restored.

This fixed my problem using a 74XL black ink cartridge in my C4480 printer. I kept getting a "Carriage Jam" message when I reinstalled it and all of the HP troubleshooting solutions didn't work. I was very frustrated because these cartridges are very expensive and the packaging says it's compatible with the C4480. Thank you for your post!
Update 1: 1 hour later, I'm still getting the same "Carriage Jam" message I've been getting. The reset only worked for one printed page. I'm a sad customer again, paying the 74XL cartridge price and even having the exact printer model number on the packaging, but it doesn't work.
Update 2: I found a workaround: when the "Carriage Jam" messages comes up, it says to press Ok to see an animation of how to fix the jam. I'm sure if it were a jam, I'm sure this would work. However, I've tried the animation multiple times to no avail. With the 74XL installed and knowing it is not a jam, now I just press Ok to get to the animation and then the red X button to cancel the animation. The printer seems to forget it was jammed.
I have to do this after every print job. The printer will complete a full print job, tell my computer the print job was stopped (even though it completed the whole job) and then display the "Carriage Jam" message. Pressing Ok and then red X cancel button clears the printer and then I have to go into the print queue on my computer and clear the so called stopped job. Then my computer and printer are ready for another print job. Very annoying, but at least it's working now.
To note, I use an iMac. I do not know the procedure for Windows or if it is even a problem. Since this seems to be a printer problem, I'm going to assume it is a problem when the printer is hooked up to a Windows computer and the same procedure I described above will fix it.

I followed the instructions and still had the error. I scolled through the info menu and ther is a selection which shows you the serial number that is read by the printer for each cartridge. My color cartridge had zeros in place of the serial number. I removed the color cartridge and noticed the a corner of the foil on the color print cartridge that makes connection to the terminals in the printer was folded over. I simply unfolded the foil and carefully placed the cartridge in the printer. That did the trick and the error was gone.
You don't need to go through all the menus. Just carefully check the corners of the foil on the back of your print cartridge to make sure they are not folded over. It is also a good idea to clean the foil with rubbing alcohol so that it makes good contact to the terminals in the printer if the foil is not folded over.
hope this helps someone.

Hi DevRao,
Your steps worked for me in that I can now print successfully but the display screen on my C4480 is stuck in a never ending loop of "animation instructions" to install the ink cartridges. I only have a black ink cartridge though because that is all I use in my home printing. I'm guessing that may be the issue?
Do you have any thoughts on how to stop the animation and get back to usual menu screen with scanning and copy functionality? Pressing any button at the moment just results in the message "busy".
Many thanks for your posts and your help.

How can i resolve this ?
Any proposed solution does not solve the problem . Sin is more than 20 years that use HP products but I have to revise my purchasing policy . A printer can cost as much as an ink cartridge and does not have a reset system errors ( 7049-35733-60215-41332-12648-39106-43155 what they mean ) I should send to repair a printer with a repair cost that is higher at market value ?? !! . Such a problem , which impacts on many customers , Netherlands, Brazil , USA , Germans , Italian , etc , HP does not put up metdodo to solve it. So much for customer service . Here the Americans are worse than the Chinese in the care of the customer . Hp goodbye ...
