"Ink Cartridges Problem - The following Ink Cartridges(s) must be replaced" and shows symbols for all 4 cartridges.

I have tried a few things like looked for a driver update and did the unplug trick described for a similar problem but a different printer.  I am worried my printer is no longer going to work with alternate source (non-HP) cartridges which will greatly affect the cost of using this printer.

Hi @paul_1357,

As I understand you are having an Ink cartridge problem error message on your HP Photosmart 5514 printer. I'll be really glad to help you with this,

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Did you make any changes to the printer before the issue started?

Are you using a genuine Original HP cartridge?

Are you able to make a copy from the printer?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Please make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Thank you for the response.  What you describe is what I called the 'unplug trick' that did not work.

What did work was going out and purchasing the costly HP ink cartridges;  after years of use, this comes up without warning, and it feels like a swindle.  I am glad it is working now, but as I mentioned I am greatly concerned about the lifetime operating cost of ownership.  HP gained the sale of a few cartridges but lost life long customer.

Hi @paul_1357,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I'm glad to hear you got it working Unfortunately, I understand you are having an issue with the ink draining quickly, In the regards, I would suggest you use the printer in Draft Mode: Lowest DPI typically used when ink cartridge levels are low or when high quality prints are not needed or print in Grayscale: Printer uses ink from all cartridges to produce a wider range of black and grey tones; suitable for high quality black and white prints

Thanks for taking the time to let the community know about the solution
