I have an HP Officejet 6500 E709n printer.

I get the following error message when I turn the printer on:

"Ink system failure.  Please turn printer off and then on".

At this point my printer is totally froze up and won't do anything.

So I do as instructed, but I still get the same message when I turn the printer back on.

I had this problem before back in August 2016 and item number 2 below corrected the prior problem.

1. First I performed a hard reset which did not fix the problem.

2. Then I performed a partial reset which did fix the problem.

I now have tried both of these procedures on my current problem numerous times.  But neither procedure

has worked to fix my current problem.

Any additional suggestions on how to get my printer back up and working properly?

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Officejet 6500 Wireless printer. I understand that you are getting Ink system failure and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,

  • Reset the printer.
  • Clean the ink cartridge vents and contacts.
  • Clean the printhead with an automated tool.
  • Manually clean the printhead.

Click here to refer the document and perform troubleshooting steps to fix this issue.

Clean the printhead in Windows

To run the printhead cleaning tool, make sure your printer is turned on and connected to a Windows computer.

  1. Load paper into the input tray.
  2. Search Windows for your printer model name, and click the printer name in the list of results.
    HP Solution Center opens.
  3. Click Settings, and then under Print Settings, click Printer Toolbox.
    The Printer Toolbox opens.

I do not understand how to do step #2 above?

I do not understand how I get to the HP Solution Center so I can perform step #3 above?

After I open up Windows Explorer and go to my homepage at yahoo.com on the internet, what do I do?  From there, how

do I get to step #3.  Could you provide me with a link?

Thanks for the reply.

Superb job on trying the different steps to isolate the issue.

  • HP solution center is not compatible with windows 7 and above.
  • Manually clean the printhead.
  • If this does not work, Contact HP phone support for further assistance.

I hope it helps and if you feel I have answered your question and concerns,

Please mark this post as a solution accepted and Kudos would also be appreciated.

Cheers.
