Hi Rowlinson,
Thank you for the quick response.
You are correct, AirPrint doesn't have an option to change the paper size so the when the print job is sent to the printer using AirPrint it is look for paper the size the document requests. I suspect that the printer is looking for US Letter size of 8½ " x 11". If you want to be able to change the paper size you could try using HP's ePrint app. I have included a document with HP ePrint Mobile App FAQ's as well as a document about getting started with ePrint.
For the invalid low ink message I have included a link to a document specific to that message when the ink is not low.

Hi Rowlinson,
I'm sorry to hear you have been having problems printing to your Officejet 8500A from your iPad.
I have included a document with trouble shooting steps when your document doesn't print when using AirPrint. I'm sure you have already completed some of the steps listed but please let me know at what point you get an error message and if they differ any from the messages you have already posted.
