My printer has suddenly stopped printing. Wheteher this has anything to do to the latest Windows updates that were installed this morning I do not know.
Despite downloading the latest printer driver from the HP website and running Microsoft Fix it as well as the Troubleshooting tool accessible through Devices & Printers I have been unable to get the printer to work. However, at one stage, while using HP Print and Scan Doctor to find the problem I was able to succssfully print a test page.
When I try to print a document, such as a Word file I go to File, Print. When I click the Print button/icon I get a message stating Unable to connect as well as Print preview is not available because Microsoft Word could not connect to the selected printer.
Can anyone help? Thank you.

got an HP computer Win7 and starter microsoft office (excel, word), HP laserjet 1018 and just a few days ago stopped printing in word, excel and adobe reader. It doesn't even try to find the printer. Uninstalled and re-installed adobe reader. Now when I try to print it crashes Adobe. It prints fine everywhere else with the purchased MS Outlook and paint and notepad etc. Not sure if that means I need to buy the full MS office and adobe software. Did run a scan with bitdefender a couple days ago and ran MS updates. Totallly at a loss here.

It seems like you have a lot of problems printing from your computer. So you cannot print in Word, Excel or Adobe and after uninstalling/reinstalling Adobe it crashes when you print. I want to focus on Microsoft Starter first and then work out Adobe later but I must ask you a few questions:
1. Do you think the MS updates and/or bitdefender scan may have caused this or did you do those steps after everything failed to print?
2. How is the printer connected to the computer (USB, wireless, or Ethernet)?
3. Is your operating system 32 bit or 64 bit? Click the link to find out how to tell if you do not know.
Here is a document on how to repair, uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Office Starter. Follow the steps here (repairing the program first followed by a test print and then doing the uninstall/reinstall if that fails) and then try to print and let me know the outcome. If it fails again, please answer the two questions above and I will be happy to help you.

Hi! Correction, it's actually MS Office Home and Business 2010. I believeMS OFfice was already installed on the computer when I purchased it and that's why I confused it with a starter kit.
1. The Scan and Windows upgrade was done fairly recently and I am certain the printer worked before that was done, but not certain if it broke just after the bitdefender scan and MS update was done.
2. The printer is connected through USB. As soon as I select print with the HP Laserjet in Word, it says unable to connect. It makes no attempt to connect. It's fine printing to a generic text only file. As I said before, it prints fine with MS Outlook, Notepad, Paint etc. Just not home office or adobe acrobat reader.
3. Got 64-bit Win 7 HP Model P6367c.
I've downloaded the latest printer driver and made no difference. Not sure if something got corrupted in the registry somewhere. Any help is much appreciated since I am completely stumped and bumped...

I completely understand. I agree that at this time it is hard to say if bitdefender, MS Updates, or MS Office caused this but that is interesting that I have heard this before (very recently). Have you done a recent back up or restore point that you can revert back to prior to May? In regards to what is able to communicate to the printer and what is not, it sounds like something happened to the in-OS drivers since I cannot find the Full Feature Drivers for your printer anywhere.
--How To Do a System Restore--
Since you have an HP computer, I will provide an alternative solution for fixing registry files. If you cannot revert back to a good date just before the updates (the MS updates I have yet to run date back to May 14th), do a back up now before running this tool I am about to give you. Although this is a very good program, when cleaning out registry files it is good to do a system back up before conducting a cleaning to this degree.
Here is a link to Advanced System Care This is a great registry cleaning tool but since it is a 3rd party software, use at your discretion, read the information in the link I have provided and use it to uninstall the printer and clean the registry. Next, re-install the Plug-and-Play Drivers for the LaserJet 1018 for Windows 7 64-bit (US Version) unless you have the software disc for it. This is all I could find for drivers regarding your printer on the website. Remember, this step is to be done if you cannot revert back to a restore point prior to the updates. Let me know what happens. I really hope this works!

Hi alygreen
I understand you are unable to install the printer on the Win 7.
I have included a document for the unknown device error.

The only thing that worked for me was System Restore. I only had to go back a week to the last Windows update because I remembered exactly when the "unable to connect" problem first occurred--less than a week before. So you have to know when the error first happened and then restore the System to a slightly earlier date.
