Out of the blue, the printer refuses to print.  All jobs, from whatever program they may come, are automatically routed to:

C:\

 WIndows

  System 32

I went to the HP website and reinstalled printers, did a firmware update, and still came up with the same refusal to print.

Is this a virus?  (I have Norton installed.)

Is this a hardware issue?  (Nothing has changed from the day before, and it was working then.)

The printer is now useless.  Seven hundred dollars and useless.

Please provide information about printer to PC connectivity and operating system used.

Try to printer internal test pages using device control panel and also try to install printer on a different computer for testing purpose.

What is the exact message you see if you try to print? Does it indicate any problem with Spooler servicer? Can you help us with a screenshot?

If you suspect a virus, you run a full system scan with Norton by booting your computer into Safe Mode. You may also try to run a scan with Norton Power Eraser tool: http://www.norton.com/npe

I discovered that the transfer to the Windows 32 folder arose because I had selected "Print to File" under the printer options.  As soon as I unchecked that box in the printer preferences, the problem was resolved.  So it was not a virus.
