This problem started recently. When I power on the printer, it often (but not always) makes a squealing noise, that varies in pitch over its duration. Sometimes I get the same noise when printing. Sometimes when I get the squeal while printing, I get an all-grey page (except for about 1" white at the bottom -- not always the same height) and the three bottom lights illuminate, indicating "fatal error". After getting into this state, if I power down the printer, wait for several minutes, and power it back on, sometimes it will be better -- no squeal; or squeal, but prints fine. I also had an instance where there was no squeal at power on, but a very quick squeal at the end of printing. I removed the print cartridge and powered on the printer. I got the same squeal. I have conducted my recent experiments printing the Demo page from the printer's Go button, rather than by sending a page from the computer (Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 64-bit, printer connected to USB). The printer is six years old and I am on my first cartridge. According to the printer configuration pages, I have printed about 1900 pages and there are about 50 pages left on the cartridge. The configuration pages show me some recent error codes -- 41.2000, 52.0000, 20.0000, each several times -- but I don't know what they mean. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and how to remedy it? Thanks.

If the printer makes noise intermittently while booting and as well as while printing and if the noise is similar to "whistling kind of noise " then Laser scanner assembly coud be the suspected hardware component causing the issue and also the error codes you have provided "41.2 and 52.0000 are Related to Laser scanner errors ". I would suggest you to consult with Customer support if the printer is having any contract or warranty else visit Hp repair center.

The noise is more like a groan than a whistle. When the noise occurs (during boot or printing) it occurs for a stretch of time during that process and then stops; it doesn't start/stop/start/stop during that process. I don't know whether or not my symptom agrees with what you are thinking of as "intermittently". Thanks for indicating what the error codes signify. Is there any customer documentation that describes them?

If you have installed Hp Tool Box  in your computer , you will be able to view the event log .The event log also contains a brief description of the error .

steps as follows :

In the Windows system tray or on your desktop, double-click the HP ToolboxFX icon.

or

On the Windows Start menu, click Programs (or All Programs in Windows XP), click HP, click

HP LaserJet 2015 Series

, and then click HP ToolboxFX., click on STATUS folder which contains links to Event log

When I installed the drivers on my current computer two years ago, I had a lot of difficulty, and never managed to install ToolboxFX. (I think the installation disk is for Windows XP; my current computer is Windows 7.) Is the event log you mention distinct from the logs that can be viewed using the Windows Event Viewer? Or is there some search I can do using the Windows Event Viewer that would show me this same information? Thanks.

windows event viewer is different from Event status in the tool box .Well at present Supported operating system for Full software solution(including hp tool box) is not available for Windows 7 -
sorry
As you had indicated that error "52.000 and 41.2000 " is listed on the configuration page several times ,i would like to inform you that for any laserjet printer 52.000 is related to Laser scanner assembly motor error and 41.2 is also related to Laser scanner assembly beam detect misprint error ..
if the noise persist , would request you to get it checked by hp repair center as it seems to be a printer hardware issue
