LaserJet Pro 200 M251nw
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

This printer has been great for 14 months but it's been getting a lot of use lately. The last couple of jobs there is an increasingly loud and long squeak or grinding noise while printing and continues after for a few seconds. It sounds like something needs to be lubricated.

The only thing out of the ordinary is that the yellow toner cartridge is low so I've been printing in black only (sheet music). But I also printed in black only when the cyan cartridge was low and it wasn't noisey like now, so it seems like a maintenance issue due to wear and tear.

I went through the user guide and the help menu but couldn't find anything. Any ideas for troubleshooting are appreciated. TIA

Howard

Hi @hleyland,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Forums for a solution to your printer's noise issue.

I understand that you are using an HP LaserJet Pro 200 color Printer M251nw with a Windows 7 computer and it has recently started making an "increasingly loud and long squeak or grinding noise while printing". I would like to help with that.

You mentioned that the yellow toner cartridge is low. The troubleshooting steps for working with this type of issue starts by checking to see if non-HP inks are being used, but does not say anything about low cartridges. It might be hard to tell, but are you able to hear where on the printer the noise is coming from. If it sounds like it is coming from that area, it might be worth replacing the yellow toner.

Another thing to check for would be any obstructions along the paper path. Here is a support document intended for use with paper jams that can be referenced if needed - Clearing Paper Jams for HP LaserJet Pro 200 Color M251n and M251nw Printers.

It may also help to make sure the printer's firmware is up to date. The firmware version can be found on the Self Test/Configuration Page which can be printed from the printer's Reports menu.

The most current firmware version is 20150212. If the version listed on the printed report precedes that, it might help to update the firmware. You can click here to go to the HP LaserJet Pro Series Firmware Update Utility download page.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.
