Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

Tray 2 pick roller is replaced in the printer but still prompting to remove jam even though there is no jam. Out of a multiple page document, it prints one page, then jams. Clear the jam, it prints the next page and prompts a jam again. When you take tray 2 out, you can see the paper was started but gets not further. tray2.jpg

I see this all the time. Your tray 2 pickup roller is very worn. To check with the paper tray removed shine a flashlight towards the back of the tray cavity and you will see the black pickup roller in the cener. It will have like tire tread marks on the outer edges and the center will be smooth. That is an indication of a worn roller. You can replace it yourself. Just do a google search for instructions including moving the roller into position for replacment. Below is a link for the roller.

I'm sorry, but I've already stated in the post the pick roller was replaced for tray 2. So, that cannot be it. Any other suggestions?

I see you are running the 8.1 version of windows. I would suggest trying a firmware update and possibly changing to another print driver. It almost sounds like the printer is try to print a duplex job, but there is some type of software/driver conflict, a hardware issue, or some paper or trash stuck in the duplex path.

usually the printer would prompt you to manually flip the paper if no duplexer were installed, but just could be some funky job language happening.

otherwise you have some paper in the paper path or a dusty sensor- the consistancy of the error leads me towards this being a software issue.

does this happen on all print jobs or just a specific file type? does this happen from all programs or 1 program in specific.

If you print a multi page internal test print like a PS font list or config page, does the error occur?

here is the product support page where you can find the latest firmware and print drivers.

also, speaking to what david said- i see  that error all the time too with a worn roller, you may want to make sure your pick up roller properly installed- also i see the paper look like that when there is a timing issue, either the paper tray is set to the wrong size paper size, or the wrong paper size has been selected in the driver.

This happens on Windows 7 machines as well.

I would suggest trying a firmware update

Firmware was updated from 8/15/2013 to 01/26/2015 (most current)

and possibly changing to another print driver.

change from PCL 6 to 5 (v5.3)

this would not explain the problem occuring in printing the PS font list

printing basic txt documents or printing pdfs -- it doesnt matter

Software error spanning across multiple firmwares, applications, Operating systems, document types, and drivers?

happens across all print jobs, all programs

Yes, printing an internal PS font list, it does the same thing.

Already have it.

I have followed the instructions to replace the pickup roller and separation roller as best as humanly possible according to here http://www.lbrty.com/tech/Manuals_HP/M351_M451sm.pdf  on page 34 and this video as well

if it is doing this on the internal report PS font list, we have effectively ruled out a driver/software issue. This points to a hardware issue with the printer, a little tear of paper in the paper path, or a dusty or sticking flag sensor.

with PC issues ruled out and regular jams occuring that almost points to a solenoid/ drive motor failure / timing issue or problem with the paper delivery assembly.

can you get the configuration page to print and does it give a specific error code?or does it just give a generic jam code something like

Jam in <location>?

are you showing matching paper sizes on the both the config page and the paper tray? When you insert tray 2, do you see the paper level indicator move?

I see you referenced the liberty parts site- thats a great resource for manuals, this looks like a pretty serious hardware failure- it really looks like you're troubleshooting everything correctly.

I can't even get the configuration page to print now without it saying that.

The error just says jam in tray 2. picture attached. jamintray2.jpg

I've changed the paper type to heavy to slow the pick roller speed, but that doesnt help and turning off duplex doesnt help either. 2 hours worth of gutting this thing to get to a sensor that may or may not be the issue just doesn't seem worth it.

I'm sure your ready to pull your hair out at this point- its tricky to troubleshoot without seeing the printer, my apologies- thanks for your patience. At this point, You may want to bring a service tech in.

You could always do the hail mary NVRAM reset- just to wipe the printer and do a complete reset and try to fix any timing issues that may have occured. ths procedure is on page 175 of the service manual.

It looks like the printer feeds the first page ok from tray 2, then as it is trying to feed the second page, that is where it stops. It looks like the second page is stopping just as it is entering the feed roller/seperation area. so again, this is a timing issue, or the sep roller/feed roller are somehow malfunctioning. which could be the tray 2 feed motor, something has broken on the physical tray 2 roller/ tray 2 seperation roller, or there is a sensor issue in the back door of the printer.

Do you have any more of these printers on site or is this the only one?

Sadly, not all error message give a specific error code, but just from looking at the first picture you posted- here are the most likely suspects- tray 2 is broken (can try another tray)

If you print from tray 1(the bypass tray), will multiple pages feed ok? if everything workse fine from tray1- then that lets you know the problem probably occured when you set the printer on its back to change out the roller, either the paper 2 feed motor is messed up, the tray 2 sep roller didnt quite get put back in correctly, there still could be a senor with paper dust or a sticky flag thats causing the problem.

sometimes there can be a little part like a spring on the registration assembly or on a flag sensor that will break and it can take hours of troubleshooting and tear down/ rebuilds to find the faulty hardware part-
