The 05 self test is a routine which the printer goes thru duing power on and also I think when you run a config page or test page it will also display this message. If it is a hardware issue I would think the formatter is the problem but there really is no test. The first thing I would do is remove the cable that goes from the printer to the computer or network so you only have power and turn on the printer and see if the error comes on after a time or it just stays at ready. It is always possible that some communication between the computer and the printer is causing the printer to enter this mode. How is the printer connected (parallel, parallel to usb or network) as that could be an issue if the printer does not go into that mode when nothing is connected except power. If that is the case see if there is a setting for bi-direction communication to see if you can turn it off so the printer only received date and does not talk back to the computer or network.

Bumping this post.
I've tried replacing the memory and that did not fix the problem either. The printer goes into self test only after it has warmed up for 5 minutes. From cold it appears to work fine, so it must be a component that has drifted out of spec or something.
Anyone got any ideas?
