E8 is an error of the scanner motor. When You swithch device on it moves a scanner carriage (to calibrate - ?). If this movement is impossible (motor break, stalled mechanism etc) the device fails with E8 error. Also this error occures if there is a problem of moving this carriage during a scanning. Once I obtain this error by buggy software trying to scan more than a scanner size. But restarting and upgrading was helpful. If the problem persists the device requires service.
