Of course, I have gone through this procedure dozens of times and sometimes it will start working again and other times I have to go through the OFF/ON procedure several times until it finally starts working. Once it starts working, it may work once or multiple times. There seems to be no pattern.
I Googled and found lots of 49 Errors but the remaining numbers and/or printers were always different. The solution suggested was to unplug the printer and unplug the network (ethernet cable). I tried this many many times and had the same results - worked sometimes and not other times. However, several days ago, I tried the exact same procedure and the only thing that I did differently was to remove and replace the cartridge. This time it worked for several days, but alas yesterday it started back with the 49 Err message. Of course, I have tried this procedure several times and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with it...
I would appreciate any input anyone has.
Thanks,
Steve

49 errors are firmware errors. Firmware is the operating system of the printer and if it becomes confused it gives a 49 error. A couple of things you can do to try and limit the error. First you will want to go to hp's web site and under support go to drivers and download the latest firmware for your printer. If your operating system does not list the firmware, just go to the XP 32 bit as the firmware will be listed there. The same file works for all systems. The printer has to be in a ready state when you do the upgrade. You will want to remove any print jobs that may be in the printq that have not printed to prevent any issues. After upgrading the firmware you will want to go the same site and download the latest driver for your printer. You can use the universal driver or postscript driver.

Thanks so much for the clear and easy solution to this problem. I have be trying to fix this for a months or more. Of course, I would get tired of messing with it and put it aside. By the way, my only reason for not replying sooner is I wanted to make sure it worked.
Thanks,
Steve
