With the release of the New Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite, HP has provided a list of supported HP Printers, and an FAQ with Yosemite related content.
HP Supported Printers in OS 10.10 Yosemite and FAQ
If you already have an HP Printer installed and working on Mac 10.9 Mavericks, you should have no issues with upgrading to 10.10 Yosemite and still be able to print/scan.
All HP Printers that were previously supported in 10.9 Mavericks, will continue to be supported in 10.10 Yosemite.
If an HP Printer had an Apple in OS driver, it will have a driver for 10.10 Yosemite.
If there was an HP Full Feature Software for your HP Printer in 10.9 Mavericks, then an HP Full Feature Software will be available for 10.10 Yosemite. The amount of time may vary to complete, so please remember to check your specific product page on hp.com in the future to see if an updated HP Full Feature Software is available for 10.10 Yosemite.

I have a Deskjet 3525. I have just upgraded to OS10.10 Yosemite. I also updated the software via the App Store "HP Printer Software Update 3.0".
My problem is that the scanning function is noit working as the system is not recognising a scanner. This is quite frustrating as I use the scanner more than the printer.
The document you provided "HP Supported Printers in OS 10.10 Yosemite and FAQ" lists all the 3520 series printers EXCEPT 3525.
My question is who is responsible for development and issuance of printer drivers...apple or HP? I am baffled as to why the Deskjet 3525 printer is not included. I get the feeling both Apple and HP seem to imply that the responsibility with issuance of drivers is with the other. I am stuck in the middle!
I already had to replace a printer, less than 3 years old, due to an operatioing system change, and I hate to have to replace my current printer, less than 2 years old!
An advice or information that can help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello oms081959,
Since I am not sure how you installed or upgraded, I may not be correct by saying that you need to install the software. HP Scanning is completed with software, and it may be that you only have the basic functions. First a couple questions, and let's see if we can get you up and going. I have actually just performed an install USB Wireless Setup, and am able to scan without issues, so this does work.
First, check to see which driver you are setup to be using on your Mac. Aso, these steps would be a little different if you were connected USB or wireless.
1. Open System Preferences
2. Open Printers & Scanners
3. Select your Deskjet 3520 sereies from the left side
4. Near the middle right side you will see "Location:", under that, does it say "HP Deskjet 3520 series" (3525 for your) or does it say "AirPrint" or something else?
If yours does not say HP Deskjet 3520 series, or something similar to that, then you need to install. We may be able to simply update the printer queue, but if that does not work, the downloaded driver from HP.COM for 10.9 full install should work in your case.
1. With your printer still highlighted on the left side, click the "-" symbol to remove the printer. (Click Delete Printer to complete)
2. Click the "+" symbol to add a new printer
3. In the drop down window, choose the "Add Printer or Scanner..."
4. If wirelessly connected, then select the "Deskjet 3520 series" Bonjour Multifunction. (Allow the search to complete and fill in the information below it.
5. Under "Use:" change this from "AirPrint" to "HP Deskjet 3520 series" (Your 3525).
If The printer series is not listed in this drop down, then the full feature driver needs to be installed as mentioned at the beginning of this post. Simply go to HP.COM and at the top of the page hover your mouse over "Support", then click on "download drivers". Enter your product model, click go, then choose your correct model from the options, use the drop down for OS and choose Mac OS X 10.9, then click Next. Click on Driver, select to download the Full Feature Driver. After download is complete, begin the installation, and follow the onscreen instructions. Please Post back your results, or further questions.

Hey Double-U-Dee,
You're my hero...the only person so far who is providing me with clear and objective rational to my issue and you have my sincere thanks for taking the time to help me.
First let me provide you answers to your questions and some background. With Maverics, before the upgrade to Yosemite, the printer & scannner worked fine. Wiresless set up with the full software from hp.com, specifically "Deskjet-3520-series_v12.23.0.dmg".
After the upgrade to Yosemite, connectivity to the printer was lost. Since no Yosemite competible software was evident on hp.com I spoke to hp support here in Dubai and they advise me to use the latest version for Mavericks (10.90), specifically "HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.40". I asked them if I need to unistall before attempting another installation and they told me no. So I installed this (wireless) but on first installation again nothing would work. With the help of hp support in Dubai I reinstalled the software (wireless), after using the uninstall feature, but not deleting any drivers first. The printer works, but the scanner does not.
What does not seem right also is:
After the software is installed, the setup utility fails to locate the printer. So local hp support told me to manually select the printer, via the IP address.
I also notice that the "location" box you mention is blank...nothing in it. So my guess is that the software is not installing properly. Give me your read on this.
Reading the documentation provided with the installation software it recommends a FULL unistall of all software before attempting a re-installation. It says that I need to delete all the installed drivers first and not to proceed before knowing how to do this. So my question is how to locate and delete EVERYTHING that needs to be deleted, before attempting another installation?
Also to be sure that the software was not somehow corrupted in the download I will download it again. Am I on the right track? Can you advise me how to do a FULL correct unitistall, i.e. delete the necessary files before proceeding with the unistall feature in the hp folder in applications, then attempting another reinstall?
Many thanks Double-U-Dee!
Kind regards,
Omar (Personal information edited by moderator)

Hi Omar,
I hope we can help get through this, & Thank You! So since at this point it seems the software did have problems, either from being removed previously or just the combination of a few things, upgrade, install, and uninstall.
If this is the only printer you have, then I suggest the following.
1. Go to System Preferences
2. Go to Printers & Scanners
3. (This step will remove all printers from the print queue) Right click on your printer on the left and choose "Reset Printing System"
4. Close out of Pritners & Scanners and System Preferences
5. Open Finder
6. Click on "Applications" on the left side
7. Move the HP or Hewlett-Packard folder to the Trash
8. Click "Finder" on the top menu by the Apple symbol, click on "Empty Trash" (then click Empty Trash to confirm)
9. Close Finder
10. Find the downloaded Full Feature software "HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.40" and attempt to install again
Note: Step 10 is under the assumption that your printer is still on the wireless network, and the mac is also on that same network.
11. Follow the onscreen instructions, including on the 3rd screen (Customer Install) to CHECK the box for "HP Scan".
12. Continue following instructions to install.
If the Printer was not on the wireless network still, then simply plug the USB cable in before running the installer, and choose to install USB to Wireless. When that install is complete and you have added the Printer Queue for Bonjour, you will then want to remove the printer queue for the USB printer.
Please post back your results. (I hope I answered the questions, if I missed something, please let me know)

Hello HSFLA,
Depenending on how you setup and upgraded, you may be able to complete the following steps. If not, if the steps do not help, then please look over the previous posts here for steps to clean up and reinstall again.
1. Click on the Apple from the top menu bar
2. Click on Software Upate...
3. Click on "Store" from menu bar
4. Click on "Reload Page"
5. Update any HP Software Updates
When complete, restart your Mac. If this still does not work, then continue below.
1. Go to System Preferences
2. Go to Printers & Scanners
3. Click your printer to highlight it
4. Click the "-" symbol to remove the printer queue
After removing the Printer Queue, now lets re-add it
5. Click on the "+" symbol to add a printer
6. Click on "Add Printer or Scanner..."
7. Select your printer from the list, ensuring you have chosen the correct connection
8. After a moment, when everything populates in the lower area, under "Use:" click and choose the "HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Printer - C309a" (May differ in name)
9. Click on Add.
Not all printers have a full feature software to install from in 10.9, so this would not be the same option for you. If the update does not resolve your issue, please post back.

Dear Double-U-Dee,
Well what can I say...I don't think there is anything I have not tried and HP support in Dubai has not been able to help either, other than the usual BASIC routines, such as:
- Power off the printer by removing the power cord.
- Remove and reinstall the software.
To be specific what I have tried is:
- I have checked my router...firmware is up to date and settings are fine.
- Power off the printer, then try again.
- Check my hard drive, (repair permissions).
- Uninstall the software in accordance with HP online support document "Mac OS X: Scanning Software Does Not Open or Stops Responding". This involved (a) reset of printing system, (b) uninstalling the printer software utilising the "hp Uninslaller" AND then deleting all hp files from the computer library and user library as per instructions, then restarting the computer and repairing disk permissions.
- I then installed Apple HP driver update 3.0 (as instructed by hp support) and then reinstalled the full latest software for OS10.90.
The result...scanning function still NOT operational. hp support then asked me to print various reports from the printer and check the connectivity via my webbrowser typing in the printer IP address. This was all fine. So the final conclusion from hp support in Dubai..."There is nothing wrong with the printer or the software the problem is the Yosemite operating system. Sorry but you need to address this to Apple." Wow, here I go again...Apple tells me go to hp...hp tells me go to Apple!
Just like to add that I have now gone through multiple installs and uninstalls as above, both via USB and wifi installation, with no success.
To make sure that you understsand the EXACT nature of the problem some insights gained from all my trials:
- If after reinstalling the software, BEFORE scanning from the computer, I attempt to scan from "Pinter to Computer" the scanner recognises the computer "Scan to Omar's Macbook?" Clicking Yes to start the scan I get an error message on the computer saying "Scanner failed to complete the scan" and on the printer "Computer failed to connect".
- If after reinstalling the software, I try to scan using HP Scan from my computer, I get the message "Scanner is unavailable. Please check your connection and that the scanner is switched on, or try again later". If I then try to scan from the printer it does not reach the point of recognising the computer, but says "Cannot connect to computer. Please check that the computer is switched on and connected".
I am not an IT expert, but I would say there is some glitch between the software and the operating system, i.e. they are not compatible. I did at one point call hp support in the US. Unfortunately they told me that as I was outside the US they cannot help me!! Don't have this issue with Apple. As long as I can show that I have purchased an Apple product, they will help even if I was living on planet Pluto...I'm a customer!
If you can think of any thing else I can do other than wipe my computer clean and reload the operating system then I'm all ears. Otherwise, I'm throwing the printer out of the window! (kiddding...but you get to know my frustration at this point. I'd go out and buy a new printer, but chances are that none of them have as yet Yosemite compatible software installed, just OS10.90 and I fear ending up with the same issue.
Regards,
Omar
