Hi, I recently (4 months ago) replaced all the ink cartridges on the printer and I was mainly printing with my preset at "Plain paper, fast draft, black and white" in an attempt to make my color ink last. I do not print too much to begin with at all. I was really surprised when I received the notification that I have to replace my magenta ink cartridge because it is too low. My printer won't even let me print in black and white at the moment because I haven't replaced it. My question is: is this common? And should I have done something differently to make my color ink last longer? I assumed that if any of the ink cartidges were getting low, it would be the black ink cartridge, but the levels on the black ink still seem high, as well as the cyan and yellow. I am wondering if there was something possibly wrong with the magenta ink cartridge to begin with or if my settings should have been different. Please advise!

What printer model?  Some color ink is generally used in printer startup and during printing to keep the printheads from clogging.  See the document here for information.

I have the HP OFficejet Pro 8500A Plus. I just got off the phone with a rep and he said that I must use the color ink at least once every other week so the color ink does not dry up. So maybe that is what happened? In any case, the message on the printer specifically says "Replace the following depleted ink cartridges to resume printing (magenta)". I'm not sure if depleted means specifically one thing or if it couldmean various things (ie. the ink dried up vs. the ink was used up)

The color ink will be used every print job at the beginning of the job and before the printhead is parked - during even black printing the printhead is waving around in the air and the color nozzles would dry out (clog) unless some color ink is "spit" to clear the nozzles before they are parked.

Depleted means the ink has been used up, not that the nozzles are clogged.
