Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you. I will be glad to assist you and let’s get right to it. Excellent observations and great diagnosis of the issue It is amply appreciated.
- Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
I will be providing a roadmap with some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. Let us try these steps:
- Please perform a hard reset on the printer from this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t8S_U8aTlk
- Then update the printer’s firmware by following instructions from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16
- Use a USB cable to update the printer’s firmware.
Now check if the issue gets resolved. If it continues, then perform all the prescribed steps from this link: HP printer ink cartridge issues including 'Incompatible', 'Missing', 'Failure' and enrollment errors
- Perform these steps: "Step 1: Make sure the cartridges are compatible" to "Step 9: Replace the cartridge"
- Replacing the faulty ink cartridge should do the trick for you as long as the printer's hardware is not faulty. Otherwise, the printer needs to be replaced.
- I am being honest about it here, by keeping your best interest in mind.
Don't buy ink cartridges to replace them. I will send you a private message to assist you with the next course of action. Check your forum private message box in the upper right corner next to the bell icon.
Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂

Thank you for your patience and good luck to you.
Please contact HP support to get this done. The cartridge has a limited warranty.
HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:
1) Click on this link – www.hp.com/contacthp/
2) Select the product type.
3) Enter the serial number of your device or select let HP detect your product option.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.
They will be happy to assist you immediately.
If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.
Thanks and have a blessed week ahead.

David,
Thanks a lot for the response. I was unable to update the software since the menu didn't permit me to carry out any operation on the printer as long as the faulty catridge was inside ( or even with no cartridge inside)
One of the suggestions was to print with a single cartridge to find if only one of the cartridges was faulty. I tried doing that & found the black & white cartridge to be faulty. The printer is now operational on a single catridge mode with the colour cartridge. I will now change the black catridge only. Thanks again for all the help.

I reviewed your response and it is wonderful to hear from you again. Your tremendous patience and commitment are truly appreciated. I am glad that at least the printer is operational in single-cartridge mode following the steps that were given. Replacing the ink cartridge should do the trick for you.
You could try performing the update using a USB cable and not directly from the printer. However, it is not required as the printer is operational now.
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂
Cheers!
