Glad to see HP is monitoring this forum and working on a fix. Then announcing it to this forum. Its only been since march of 2013.

Just a brief follow-up to my previous posting.  As I feared, the printer stopped working again shortly after my last posting, and has never worked since.

Beware of HP products and their inability or incompetence in standing behind them!

I have used HP exclusively for about 30 years.  I have a small business and all of our computers and printers are HP.  This Pro 8600 (N911a) model has been great for the most part and scanned and printed consistently.  Now, I have the same issue s all of these users.  Just installed about $150 of new ink (per the printer) and can't get beyond the same printer head error.  I have been to every source for help, have reset the print head about 8 times, cleaned the head and cartridges, upgraded the firmware and stopped plugging it into a surge protector.  No dice.  Tomorrow is the day I will divorce HP, as from all that I have read, they don't give a **bleep** about their customers - they have too many to worry.  I don't support government intervention as a rule, but there should be protections for consumers in cases like this.  After 100 complaints, they should have to give affected consumers at the very least a voucher to apply the sales price to another, hopefully better product.  Sounds like they have lost the recipe for quality on their print head design.  ANyway, I was going to spend an hour or two tomorrow on the phone with tech support, but sounds like I've done everything possible.  If I'm going to throw away $150 of new ink, I certainly won't again reward HP with another purchase.  Maybe try a Lexmark this time.  There must be some manufacturer that's cleaning up with thousands of dissatisfied HP users.

I can relate to all of the posts in this forum.  After several frustrating days with trying all of the "fixes" from HP, and getting the finiky printer to do a few more pages, the failed print head error is now permanent.  Nothing I tried will get past the error.  Since I had about $150 in ink I just bought the Officejet 8610, since it takes the same cartridges.   I am hoping the problem was resolved with the newer models.

I have seen "refurbished" printheads on e-Bay for arounf $50, and am considering this option to revive the 8600.

I got this dreadful "Missing or Failed Print Head" for my printer too after I purchased this printer for two years. I tried the solutions provided on the link http://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c02899429. But it did not work at all. This product must be flawed as so many customers complained. And HP does not response this problem at all. Will never buy HP product again!

Failed print head after 2 years of light use. I have bought HPs all my life. All done with that. The device does have a scanner and a fax, but those are rendered useless because the failed printhead error message hijacks the whole machine. So out to the end of the driveway it goes.  I also have a small fortune in 4 relatively full XL ink cartridges. Moving on to Epson.....hope to have better luck. HP has gone way down hill.

have the same problem. (2 months out of warranty) . happend just out of the blue, no paper jam, no cartridge switch, just like that.  Contacted help desk giving me the same information and steps to go through as in the manuel and other info... about a dozen times reseated the print head....nothing changed. can't even get passed the error message for a reset... They offered me a 20% voucher when buying a new HP printer... strange way of keeping your customer satisfied...with all these similar problems you'd expect a more responsible way of dealing with this issue by a major world player...

The same printer error occurred with my HP and the same model, just after the warranty expired.  I, too, was offered the same 20% deal!  I needed a printer for Graduate school, so I purchased the model that was one step higher.

I have only had my machine for 5 months. Purchased brand new. Printing became very blurry and grainy for a few days and then I got the "message". Failed printhead. Though under warranty I had to pay $18 shipping to get it 2 days later. Could not wait the 7-10 days for free shipping since I work from home. Very unhappy.

Seems to me HP would at least cover shipping since it is clearly a printer defect. Used to be a big HP fan. Lately have had nothing but trouble with machines and disappointing resolutions.

I have had the same problem as everyone else. Printer was just out of warranty. I tried all the fixes. Timing is very fishy. I think they are made to break down around that time.  I purchased all new ink. Still says same problem that printhead is missing.  Won't scan or fax either which has nothing to do with ink. I want my money back for all the ink that was needlessly purchased. HP is a bad product and worse to steal more money when they know the item won't work again.
