Deskjet 3630
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Deskjet 3630 used to print in colour, but now it doesn't.

I've bought new ink cartridges - both black and tricolour - and tried again but it just prints black.

I've tried scanning in colour and it's fine and also test pages have printed off in colour, so the printer seems to be physically OK - it just wont print colour from my laptop anymore (BTW, I'm connect by USB directly from the laptop to the printer).

I've checked in printer preferences to see if I'm set up to print in colour or black and white but the option doesn't seem to be available (Right click n start button, select control panel, select Devices and Printers, Right click on my printer Icon (HP DJ 3630 series) and go to printer preferences ... on the paper/quality tab I only hace tray selection and basic quality settings; there's no Colour or Black options so I know I haven't accidently set these).

Help please, I'm getting "a bit tired of this", what is wrong or what am I doing wrong?

@Dave591,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out.

I understand that you are unable to print in black from your HP DeskJet 3630 All-in-One Printer.

This issue could occur if the electrical contacts on the cartridge or the printer are not working.

And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink

Let me know how that works.

I hope you have a good day ahead.

Yeah, I'd already tried that. Also, in my original posting I said that I could scan a colour document or produce a test print (which is colour and black and white) so it seems that the printer itself ... the problem only exists when I try to print from my laptop.

@Dave591,

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the issue still persists after following the steps provided in the previous interaction.

This issue could occur if the firmware is not updated.

Please follow the link to update the firmware from the link: Firmware Update

If the issue still persists, then you need to uninstall and reinstall the software from the links below:

1. Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)

2. Full Feature Software and Drivers

Let me know if this works.

I hope you have a good day ahead.

Hi - I tried the firmware update but it made no difference (during the install a pop up appeared asking me to select the printer required - there was only one. I couldn't select it because it was greyed out - and the status was showing "up to date" anyway.

I'll try the uninstall/fre-install later when I have time.

FYI, I don't know of it helps but the colour document I'm using for my test prints come out perfectly when I scan them, so it seems like the local printer functionality is fine (as I said before) but when I print the original file from my laptop it comes out black and white - or to be more precise there's some kind of scaling going on because the colour sections of the document are in a lighter grey than the actual black sections.

Anyway, thanks for your help so far.

@Dave591,

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the issue still persists after following the steps provided in the previous interaction.

This issue could occur if the "Grayscale Printing" option is selected in the printing preferences.

Hence, you need to deselect that option.

Please follow the link for the instructions in detail: Printing with Black Ink Only (Windows)

Let me know if this works.

I hope you have a good day ahead.

Hi - at the risk of becoming a pain, I've already tried to do that. In my original posting I said I'd gone to printer preference but the option to change between black and white printing didn't seem to be there. So from that I assumed that I'd not accidently changed it ...

All I have on the Printing Preference/Advanced Options tab is :-

Paper Output (to change paer size) and

Document options/printer features (such as pages per sheet layout, borderless printing etc, etc).

So, nothing about colour of black and white printing.

To be honest, I'm beginning to bore myself with this one 🙂

@Dave591,

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the print in black only option has not been selected.

This issue could occur if the drivers are corrupted or not installed properly.

Hence, I request you to follow the steps to uninstall and reinstall the software as mentioned in the previous interaction.

Let me know if this works.

I hope you have a good day ahead.
