Tech Support Team:

I posted re: this same topic a few days ago but can't find it anywhere (as an account Post or by browsing through your forums), so I'll try again:

My printer is plugged directly into my wall socket.  A few days ago, it started getting stuck on its Now printing and Canceling operational modes.  It reverts to "Now printing" when on but idle, and without any prompting.  If I try to cancel the non-existent job, the printer then gets stuck in Canceling mode, and won't quit unless turned off or unplugged -- or occasionally if I wait for a very long time.  Sometimes even Shutting Down is delayed, and I must unplug the printer to resume.  I've tried the on/off reboot fix-it method, unplug-wait, on/off-unplug together, on/off-unplug modem, cleaning the paper rollers, re-installing the printer, and changing the IP address as a network test.  Still sticky.  I'm the only one using my laptop, but I share internet access with others in my household.  Our available networks haven't changed.  Oddly enough (to me, anyhow), the printer has recently shown up in my laptop's list of known networks, and I can't remove it from there.  This, however, has happened previously, without any printer snags.  It could be related to the problem, but I doubt it.  Maybe, though . . .  When not hopelessly spinning, the printer manages to cough up a few nicely printed sheets, as if Now printing were merely a suggestion to me, as in, "Please print something!"  I guess Canceling may be a similar sentiment, as in "Okay, you can stop now.  I'm tired."  Whatever.  Please help.

Hello, @janetjb1 – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for your continued participation on the HP Forums! I’d like to help with the printer issue that you are facing.

First off, thank you for explaining the issue so clearly. Also, greatly appreciate all your troubleshooting steps 🙂

Going through your post, I would first recommend you perform a firmware update on your printer. Also, I would like to know whether the “copy” feature is working well to isolate the issue further.

Go to http://hp.care/2eo2MR1 to download and update the printer firmware. Once done, follow the steps mentioned below to perform a power drain on the printer:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
  • Now, place a document face down on the scanner glass and press the copy option on the printer control panel. Let me know if it makes a good copy or not.
  • If the copy works fine, try making a print from the PC and check.

Thanks, I look forward to hearing back from you!

Good luck 🙂

Thanks for responding to my post.  Sorry for my delayed reply.  I couldn't check in until this evening.  At this point, I'm mainly writing to  acknowlede your message,  but also to let you know that I'm following through with your advice re: firmware update.  After I download and install the update, I'll report back to you again, and we can continue from there, if necessary.  Otherwise, issue resolved, I'll simply report the results to you, and click the forum Accepted Solution button, with much gratitude.

Meanwhile: Thanks again.  Now I'll move along with firmware updating procedures.  !

I couldn't install the firmware update linked in your forum post to me.  The program couldn't find my printer.  However, I'll check for another firmware update via elsewhere on HP's website, and report the results to you.

Thanks again.

Hi @janetjb1,

I'm here to help. 🙂 I got to know from your post that, when you run the printer firmware update, the update utility is unable to locate your printer. Before you update the printer firmware, make sure that:

1.) Printer software and drivers are installed on your PC.

2.) Printer should not be in an error state.

3.) If your printer front panel is unresponsive, disconnect and reconnect power, and restart.

4.) If your printer is connected using a wireless connection, please connect your printer to your PC with a USB cable. You can switch back to using your wireless connection after the update is complete.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Unfortunately, my printer is constantly in an error mode, so I probably can't carry out your suggestion regarding firmware updates.  I think there is something wrong with my sensors, but I'm not sure.  Anyhow, very sorry for my irresponsibly long delay in replying to your post, and thank you very much for your advice.  I'll try to switch from wireless to a cable connection now, just in case that helps.  If any significant change occurs after that, I'll let you and the forum know.

Thanks again.  Sorry again.  I appreciate your work and your attempt to help me with this frustrating problem.

Sincerely,

--Janet

P.S. If not a sensor problem, there may be a bug in the spooling system or elsewhere.  Either way, I'm lucky to have this forum.    ! --J

Hello, @janetjb1

Did you try performing a power drain and making a copy? This will help us isolate the issue. Try the steps below and reply with the findings:

Thanks, I’ll watch for your reply!

Cheers 🙂
