All,
My printer is doing one of two things. Either the display is not showing anything or when I reboot it shows that it is starting by showing Hewlett Packard >>>> on the display but it never comes to a ready state. The only thing that has changed recently is that I have changed the toner cartridge.
All help is appreciated.

Personnally, I believe that HP should issue consider a recall for all M2727 printers. I've posted about similar issues.
In answer to your question, it may be that the toner cartridge is the problem. According to the service manual, HP checks to ensure that the toner is a "genuine" HP cartridge; although it is supposed to display a message. I'm going to try something on my M2727nf and will post if it it looks promising...

Hi gfrost2000,
If the display will not come to Ready (hung control panel, HP logo with arrows..) your printer needs to be serviced and the formatter replaced. A local service provider can fix it for you, or the HP Call Center (1 800 hp invent) can give you your other service options.

I was told by a tech. that HP has extended their warranty on this issue but can't find it anywhere!? I phoned HP Business Support and they referred me to a service center. I called and explained the problem and asked for confirmation that HP will honor the replacement part(s) but no answer yet. An experienced technicion with over 25years of OEM service experience said it seems to be the formatter board. I have at least 4 HP M2727 not working and one printer that the tech said uses the same formatter board with nearly identical problems. I have written and spoke to senior HP reps and no one admitted to a problem. I even wrote to the President of HP and actually recived and spoke to someone and explained the above. He took my e-mail and promised I would get satisfaction but never heard from him or anyone else again. If I do not get confirmation of approved warranty I will be giving it to an experienced tech for analysis and confirm in fact what I suspect and then persue the matter with HP more aggresively. Good luck to us all on this one.

This is after the fact but it may help someone else. This works for firmware error or the dreaded “Hewlett-Packard >> >>; which was my particular issue.
I am not sure how technical you are, however, I have a somewhat simple fix that worked for me.
1st. Download the firmware utility update for your particular model provided by HP.
2nd Install the printer manually using the usb connectivity- that’s if you don’t have it already installed via USB; I used the HP universal driver.
Remove the printer left cover. It snaps on. Start by gently prying from the back exposing the circuit board (formatter).
On the formatter (green circuit board) there is a 2 pin connector labeled 10 or 11 that needs to be shorted or jumped. It was located in the middle of the board
Turn the printer on while it’s connected by usb. Jumper or short the 2 pin connector - the display will state "ready to load firmware". You will also hear the printer usb driver connect / initialize in windows-
Next start the HP firmware update utility, select your printer from drop down list. If it’s connected correctly the display will change to erasing firmware, then programing firmware; finally it will display "firmware rom upload complete" - or something close to that.
Wait until the progress bar on the firmware update utility in windows completes and display the smiley face (about 3 min). Then turn printer off - unplug /disconnect the usb cable from the printer (printer may mistake usb connector as external USB storage – a firmware glitch I believe).
Turn printer on and watch it boot normally--- You are done.
PS if while loading the firmware utility a windows displays stating that the file failed to print check the virtual usb driver within windows, select the last one or delete / remove then reload the printer driver after you have shorted the jumpers… Note – the above process will not work until you have the driver loaded correctly via usb.
Have fun Techin

Universal HP, how do I contact you? My HP is about 3 years old--has had issues starting up since day 1 but usually just rebooting helped. Now it is stuch either with no display at all or the HP startup screen. I tried to update the firmware but got stuck in the "Erasing...." screen. I turned it off and back on as it told me to do now the screen says "Fatal Error 1. Call HP Support!"
