Officejet Pro 8600
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I keep getting the message "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists contact HP." Turning printer on and off has not helped and neither has replacing ink cartridges.

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Printer. I understand that you getting ink system failure error and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Reset the printer.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer.

Clean the ink cartridges, and then check the error message.

Update the printer firmware.

Clean the printhead with an automated tool.

Reseat the printhead up to three times.

Click here and refer the document to perform the above steps.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers.

Thanks sandytechy20. I followed your steps and my Officejet Pro 8600 is working again. Hopefully the problem won't reoccur, but for now I am good.

@Sandytech20, I have this same issue and did all of the steps provided, but could not do #5 because I can't get passed the error screen on the printer. It won't give me the option to do anything.

The screen says: × Cartridge Problem

One or more cartridges appear to be damaged.

Removed them and replace with new cartridge.

I've replaced the Black cartridge 3 times with HP ink. The problem is still there.

What can I do next?

Did the 'accepted solution' below, several times, still doesn't work - get message 'missing or failed printhead'.  I've tried everything that has been suggested by the print and scan doctor, and the printer diagnostic tool - multiple times.  Have cleaned, reset, turned off, removed power cord, etc.  Nothing works.  Does this mean I have to replace the printhead?  And if so, I see there are two (one for black/yellow and one for cyan/magenta)- how does one know which one to purchase?  I tried to get the printer tools to clean the printheads, but I keep getting the message there is a problem with the printer or ink system (duh).  Please advise how to proceed.  Thank you.
