When I scan to my desktop, the image preview shows the correct orientation but when I save the image, it is turned 90°.  I tried turning preview 90° and my image was then saved upside down.

Which scanning software / application are you using for the scan?

In general:

Because you cannot correct the issue by shifting the orientation after the scan, try changing the way you have placed the item on the printer glass.   This may not be the answer; it will test whether the image on the glass is in the correct rotation.

Help from the printer How-to Section on Scan:

  1. Document provides a list of popular scan programs and explanations on their use.
  2. For example, the "Scan with HP Software" section provides a how-to video.

and

  1. This document shows a "how-to" image to place items on the printer glass.

If all else fails, save the stubborn scan, open the image in Paint : Use horizontal or vertical rotate to flip the image into the right rotation.

I am scanning from the computer.  I don't know how to find information about what software that is.  I tried following the directions for when the scanner says it's offline, unplugging from scanner then the wall.  That has helped the situation.  It isn't every scan now just some.  Still, it's very frustrating.  I have an enormous mountain of photo's to scan and this is a disaster to productivity.

Which program am I using?

The application / program is likely the Printer Assistant shortcut icon on your Desktop, else the program is whatever you are clicking on to start the scan.

Right-click on the icon / shortcut > check the information in "Target".   The path and the name of the program are located / presented in the box to the right of the word "Target:"

If you are starting the application from the windows start screen  (Windows key) , the program is whatever you are clicking to start the scan.

If you are using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) from your browser, the program is "Webscan".

Printer is Offline - test results

Reference:

Printer is Offline (Windows)

If Printer Reset has in some way influenced the outcome, it is less likely the problem is related to software.

Trying different programs - "Eliminate the program as the problem"

If you like, do try a different program / application for the scan.

Help from the printer How-to Section on Scan:

  1. Document provides a list of popular scan programs and explanations on their use.
  2. For example, the "Scan with HP Software" section provides a how-to video.

The recommended scan program for post 2013 printers:

HP Scan Extended

If there is no difference regardless of which program / application you use, it more likely the problem is Hardware.  There is no fix, adjustment, or setting to fix failing hardware.

Hardware / Error Checking

If you have not already done so, complete all the steps:

Step 6:  Service or Replace the printer

If the printer is aware of the problem, you might see an Error on the printer panel.

Commentary

I hope you find an easy solution, that is, something that fixes the problem without having to service or replace the printer.

Another of our Forum Experts might have something to add in which case he / she will post on this thread.
