In addition to the normal noise when printing, the printer now makes a very loud grinding noise as if gears are stripping. This happens on the first page printed only. Is the printer breaking already ?  Its only 2 years old.

@jackhs

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand there are new noises from the printer,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you attempt performing a hard reset?

Have you updated the firmware?

If you haven't, please do the above and then follow the below steps:

A grinding sound is heard when the printer is turned on or when it is printing. Blinking lights may accompany the noise. The problem can be caused by a carriage stall or a paper jam.

Solution:

  1. Turn the printer on.

    • For the 800, 900, 3820, 5500, and 6000 series, open the top cover of the printer. Verify that the carriage moves to the centre of the printer. If the carriage does not move to the centre, proceed to step 2.

    • For the 5100, 5600, and 5800 series printers, open the top cover of the printer. Verify that the service station (the piece below the cartridges) lowers, allowing access to the cartridges. If the service station does not lower, proceed to step 2.

  2. Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer.

  3. If the carriage moved to the centre, or if the service station lowered, remove the cartridges. Check inside the printer for any broken parts.
    If the carriage did not move to the centre, try to manually slide the carriage to the centre. If the carriage is locked either in the left or right position, proceed to step 5.

Let me know how that works out, keep me in the loop and Good luck! 😉

Heads up, I have reviewed your other post and will be posting an answer for it, shortly. 🙂

Thank you for your response to my question concerning the new noise from my printer ( a staccato noise).  Can you please explain the steps for the hard reset on the printer.  I have the latest update of the filmware.  I have opened the printer and can not see any jammed paper and I removed the color cartridge and reinstalled it and replaced the black cartridge with a new one. Same noise on first page printed, all other pages printed do not make the noise.

Thank you again

@jackhs

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

The procedure to perform a hard reset had been mentioned on the link I had shared in my last post and I would request you check that again: CLICK HERE FOR MORE STEPS AND INSTRUCTIONS.

Although, if the issue persists after performing all the steps as mentioned in the article, I would recommend you Contact HP to set up a hardware service as this could be a hardware malfunction.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get the phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty repair services under the manufacturer's warranty will be free of charge.
