HP Officejet 8040
Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks

Brand new HP Officejet 8040 prints test sheets out in black ink and blue ink (calibration was successful). Brand new ink cartridges. However, now trying to print in color, but keeps coming out in black and white. Operating system is a MacBook Laptop OS X 10.9.5

As I understand the printer is only printing in black and blue,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details: 

Did you check if the issue persists while using the copier (printer as a standalone)?

Have you attempted to perform a power reset?

 

If you haven't, here's how it's done:

Resetting the printer can resolve many issues:

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

    NOTE:

    HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

    The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

  9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

If the issue persists, follow these steps to clean the cartridges from the printer control panel.

  1. Load U.S. Letter or A4 size, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, and then touch Setup (). The Setup menu displays.

  3. Swipe the display up, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  4. Touch Clean Cartridges. A Print Quality Diagnostic report prints.

  5. Examine the Print Quality Diagnostic report.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, touch Proceed when prompted to continue the next level of cleaning. Repeat these steps for the third cleaning stage, if necessary.

         NOTE:

      If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform all three levels of cleaning again.

    • If the print quality is acceptable, touch Done when prompted to continue the next level of cleaning. You do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  6. Examine the print quality on the Print Diagnostic report.

   NOTE:

To avoid issues that require cleaning, always turn the printer off with the Power button.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If it does not resolve the issue, Clean the Printhead.
