Why when phone is answered or when you ring out fax machine goes to Off hook fax Mode and we need to turn off and turn back on printer to enable machine to send and recieve faxes.

Thank you for this information.

Is there a reason why you put the fax phone cord into 2-EXT on the back of the printer? It should be in 1-line at the back of your printer. I am going to provide an example: Source: Cannot Send or Receive Faxes.

You should be using the 2-wired phone cord that came in the box with the printer. Make sure the telephone cord is in the wall jack, then connect the other end of the telephone cord to the port labeled 1-LINE on the rear of the printer.

When using the 2 EXT port, this is for any added features on this fax line and you said you don't have any added features. I will provide another example:

After you turn off this printer, are you able to send or receive a fax once the message is removed? I will be looking forward to hearing from you again! Smiley Happy

Hello Shaz12,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I understand when you answer the phone or when you dial out, the Officejet 4630 states phone off hook. I will do my best to assist you! I would recommend following this HP document on 'Phone Off Hook' Status Message Displays on the Control Panel.

I also need to find out what type of added features do you have on this fax line? Could you post this information. I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great day! Smiley Happy

We have a phone plugged into the ext on the fax machine that is all that is on this phone line. The message Off hook fax mode stays on machine even after we have hung up the phone and the only way to get rid of that message is to shut down printer and turn on again but surely we don't have to do that everytime we take a call on phone so that we can fax later.

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear in my last response yes we do have added features we have a  phone attached in 2 EXT port. yes once we turn the printer off and on again the fax mode resets itself and we can fax as normal, it's just whenever we get a phone call in on the attached phone or call out on it then after we hang up we get the Off Hook fax mode message and we can't fax anything. Thank You

Two days ago I faxed a document an as usual all went well.

Today I get "Phone off hook" message on the fax/printer.

I have a hp Officejet Pro 8500 (fax/scanner/printer).

* No changes have been made since last fax!

* The phone line stays open when fax is connected (if I wait long enough the operater will come on with a message).

*When the phone line is connected directly to the wall jack, then and only then will I get a dial tone

* Wall jack to port 1-line, phone jack to port 2-ext

*The fax test fails due to no dial tone.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, if the fax is connected I can't dial out or recieve due to no dial tone.  If i disconnect everything and then reconnect

I get a tone for about 5 seconds and then "Phone off hook" displays.

I have only the phone (does have answering machine, always worked before) in the loop.

I have a cable modem, not connected to the fax/printer.

A separate telephone cable modem is downstairs blinking letting me know a line is open/in use.  When cable is disconnected blinking stops and dial tone is restored.

Something additional, when the fax is turned off, I still get no dial tone.  Connect the phone directly to wall and I get dial tone.
