HP OfficeJet 4650
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When my ten-year-old Canon laser printer went fubar recently, I had to buy a new printer, and when I told the BestBuy rep my needs and my financial constraints, he enthusiastically recommended the HP OfficeJet 4650.  For many years I had been frequently emailing multi-page scans using the Canon and some scanning software I had downloaded many years ago for free; because of either the fragility or the heavy stock of the original, I had always had to scan one page at a time.  Trying to use the promising built-in scanning function of the new HP 4650, I was having no success with multi-page scans with the document placed on the printer glass;  So, I called HP Customer Service and described the problem to the knowledgeable and patient "Sophia," who told me that the ONLY way to scan a multi-page document with this HP product was via its automatic document feed ("ADF").  I told her that if that were the case I would now have to take the sub-standard HP product back for a refund and buy something else, mumbling something to the effect that it's no surprise that Fiorina couldn't make the grade.  I knew how much time and hassle would be involved in getting the seller to rescind my purchase.  The next evening, after I had cooled down, I asked myself, why not try the software already on my computer, that had been working flawlessly for ten years, to see if it would also work with the new HP printer?  And, sure enough, it did and it does.  Problem solved.  The perfectly performing software is Softi Scan to PDF, and I think it's still free.  Forgive me for yelling at you, Sophia, but please don't tell another caller that it's impossible to scan a multi-page document using the HP printer glass:  the answer lies outside HP, and it's very simple and easy.  I will keep my HP OfficeJet 4650 for now, or at least until some new unresolveable crisis arises.

As a long-time laser-printer advocate, I even find the print-quality satisfactory.  I hope this helps someone.  --Jim

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP forum and sharing your experience.  In fact the HP software is able to scan multiple pages to a PDF usnig both the Scan Glass as well as the ADF.

Can you download and install the FULL feature printer software from HP for your operating system:

This relevant video will show you how to scan multiple pages to a PDF. (the concept of "Add pages"  is the same even though the scan UI is slightly different for your pritner and the one in the video)

Hope that helps.
