Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I purchased and installed brand new 902XL cartridges 2 days ago. The old cartridges (standard 902) printed all 4 colors just fine, but the 902XL black cartridge is not printing on the paper.

I have cleaned the printheads 6 times (3 before and 3 after uninstall/reinstall of the drivers) and nothing has worked.

There are no error messages.

I updated to the newest firmware AFTER the problem started, but it has not corrected the issue.

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community.

I reviewed the case regarding issues with the printer's cartridge. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 😉

In this case, I would recommend cleaning the cartridge and try it again. 🙂

1. Gather the following materials.

Dry foam-rubber swabs, lint-free cloth, or any soft material that does not come apart or leave fibers (coffee filters work well)

Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the ink cartridges) 2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

3. Slide your fingers into the two slots, and then gently lift up to open the ink cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the ink cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

4. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

5. To release the ink cartridge, lift the lid on the ink cartridge slot, and then gently push the lid back until it stops.

6. Pull up on the ink cartridge to remove it from the slot.

7. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides.

8. Lightly moisten the lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.

9. Clean only the copper-colored contacts on the ink cartridge, and then allow the ink cartridge to dry for about 10 minutes.

10. Use the swab or cloth to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the printer in the ink cartridge slots.

11. Allow the carriage contacts to dry for about 10 minutes.

12. Hold the ink cartridge at a slight upward angle with the ink cartridge contacts facing the rear of the printer, slide the ink cartridge into the empty slot, and then close the lid on the ink cartridge slot to secure the ink cartridge in place.

13. Close the ink cartridge access door.

14. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. 😉

After cleaning the contacts the test page shows a faint trace of grey, but still no solid black lines or text.
The uppercase/lowercase stream of letters at the top is barely visible when held under a desk lamp.

@pjcpoet

Welcome to the HP Support Community

Is the copy working fine with Black?

If the copy is working fine this could be an issue with the printer driver!

Could you please help me with the operating system of your computer?

Meanwhile, I suggest you do a Hard Reset on the printer

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.

(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Then, follow the document: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-officejet-6960-all-in-one-printer-series/9514854/model/95147... for Black or Color Ink Not Printing, Other Print Quality Issues.

Keep me posted, how it goes!
