HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After poor printing quality and several attempts to clean cartridges did not improve it, I did a reset of the printer to original settings. After the reset, the first screen states that the Instant Ink cartridges cannot be used in printer because printer isn't registered. When I skip that screen, it moves to aligning the print cartridges and is perpetually stuck because it can't use the print cartridges.

Do you recommend replacing the Instant Ink cartridges with store-bought to get through the setup?

My printer is still listed in my Instant Ink account -- will the cartridges work after set up is complete?

Note that my printer is a year past original warranty expiration and it would be good to know if that will complicate the reset and re-registering through HP and Instant Ink.

Thank you.

@MS-SeaWA, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

A reset should not be performed on Instant Ink enrolled printer. Doing so will delete all the Instant Ink data on the printer. Now, as the printer is not enrolled in Instant Ink, you are not able to use the printer.

Re-enroll the printer in Instant Ink to continue the setup. You will not be charged.

Printer warranty will not affect this.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

I had already started the reset when I asked the question, so I used retail purchased ink cartridges to complete the process.

Unfortunately, this resulted in my enrollment with Instant Ink resetting along with my usage and credits.

How can I recover my credits from my original account?

Can I still use the instant ink cartridges I removed from the printer before the reset?

Yes, you can use the Instant Ink cartridges only after re-enrolling the printer.

Re-enroll the printer in Instant Ink with same old credentials to continue the setup. You will not be charged. Your account will be re-established.

Let me know how it goes.
