officejet 8710-20
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

From previous thread, our 8600 pro ADF died, out of warranty, only solution = buy new model (our throw away society).

Questions regarding what I beleive to be the current replacment series (8710, 20, etc):

1. Critical: do all have 2 separate input trays: 1 legal, 1 letter?

2. Does the ADF still tend to go south after a few years?

3. I have a remaining stock of 8600 ink cartridges, can I use them up with the 20 even though it appears the 8710-20 prefers a cartridges 1 or 2 digits higher in model number?

 4. Is it real life true that this newer model uses less ink/page?

5. I do not use the fax. Is there any difference with the wireliess scan to computer capiblity/software?

6. The base warranty is 1 year *limited*. What does limited mean? If the machine goes south during warranty are there local repair depots (Denver, CO) or does HP send a box for return?

7. Does HP have an extended warranty?

8. Are there any 'killer' new features or is the model change simply programmatic?

9. Is there any difference/ease of use with the print to the HP from your iPhone or laptop when not at home?

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

Great questions, we'll attempt to reply them the best we can:

1. Critical: do all have 2 separate input trays: 1 legal, 1 letter?

The Officejet Pro 8710/20/30 comes standard with only 1 input tray.

However, if you need an optional tray, there is one for the Officejet Pro 8720/30.  Only the HP Officejet Pro 8740 comes standard with 2 trays.

2. Does the ADF still tend to go south after a few years?

All the HP products are tested to be reliable, however, as with all mechanical parts, it goes through wear and tear.

If you do tons of scanning, you may want to consider the Officejet Pro 8730/40 series, as it's ADF scans boths sides in one pass

For a demo of the ADF for these series, check out this relevant video:

HP Officejet Pro 8710 / 8720 /8730 /8740 : Copy & Scan a 2 sided document using the ADF

3. I have a remaining stock of 8600 ink cartridges, can I use them up with the 20 even though it appears the 8710-20 prefers a cartridges 1 or 2 digits higher in model number?

Unfortunately, the 8600 ink cartridges cannot be used in the 8700 series.  Which exact model of 8600 printer do you have?

 4. Is it real life true that this newer model uses less ink/page?

If it stated on the box, it has to meet certain ISO requirements before HP can make the claim, so teh answer is "Yes".

However, you can also use the "Draft" mode for everyday use, which is what we use for normal printing.  This saves ink and prints faster as well!

5. I do not use the fax. Is there any difference with the wireliess scan to computer capiblity/software?

The FULL feature software is different for every printer.  The software for the 8700 series is defintely different than that of your current printer.  It does have the Scan to Computer features that the 8600 currently have among other features.

6. The base warranty is 1 year *limited*. What does limited mean? If the machine goes south during warranty are there local repair depots (Denver, CO) or does HP send a box for return?

A limited lifetime warranty means that a manufacturer is contractually obligated to replace parts of a product that break or are defective over the life of the product. However, the manufacturer is not legally obligated to replace parts that are not mentioned in the warranty or are broken or misused by the consumer.

During the warranty period, a new/refurbished printer will be send to the customer with a box for return.

7. Does HP have an extended warranty?

Yes, please check this out at the time of purchase.

8. Are there any 'killer' new features or is the model change simply programmatic?

This link compares the Officjet Pro 8710/20/30/40 series

http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/4AA6-4026ENUC.pdf

Key point worth mentioning is that the 8720/30/40 uses a mechanism that the pages comes out page down (for privacy).  Moreover, the duplex print speeds of the above printers is almost equivalent to the simplex printing.

have already mentioned on the two sided scan in one pass for the 8730/40 series ADF.

9. Is there any difference/ease of use with the print to the HP from your iPhone or laptop when not at home?

The printer does have an "Email" address as per teh 8600 series.  Hence, you can send an "email" to your printer and it will print when you are away from the printer.

Hope that helps!

A. >>>> if you need an optional tray, there is one for the Officejet Pro 8720/30.>>>>

I've looked at images--2 points of confusion:

1. There appars to be just 1 large drawer or door at the front of the machine. Is that where the output tray(s) reside? The trays are no longer visibly separate trays viewing from the front?

2. Are you saying that the 20/30 models have a vacant slot for a second tray to slide in below the first tray and that both slots are filled w/trays on the 40? That the 20/30/40 are identical insofar as output tray inserts are concerned, just that the 20/30 are shipped w/the second tray slide vacant whereas the 40's second tray slot is filled w/a tray?

3. If you purchase from Amazon for example, I'm not sure either the full array of warranty options are available nor the optional tray?

B. Regarding the ink.... >>>>Which exact model of 8600 printer do you have?>>>>>

For Amazon purchase, really can't help you on that.  You can check with Amazon on their warranty options and accessories.

Thanks for the Printer Model clarification.  Your printer is using a different Ink Cartridges from the 8700 series

Have a nice day!

Do you have a direct link hand for purchasing the 2 tray for an 8720? Someone provided a link previously that just went to the 8720 page but I didn't find the optional tray cost and purchase link information.

Hi,

Here's the link to the optional tray:

It's currently out of stock though.

Hope that helps.

The page displays a white input tray.  There appears no color option on the page. The 8720 (that I viewed and we prefer) was black?

What is the HP Laserjet equal in terms of 'all in one', color, 2 input trays?

Do you have a handy link for a compairison chart that includes cost of use?

What is the compelling difference (nowadays) between the two different technologies?

Hi Mark,

The Officejet Pro 8720 comes in various color schemes - depending on which vendor carrying and selling it.

With regards to Laserjet equivalent, please check on HP.com, they have a range of printers and their specifications.

Laserjets and Inkjets are cominng close/equivalent in terms of print speed.  The inkjets have a key advantage in terms of photo printing, since inkjets can produce a wider range and variation of colors as compared to Laserjets (toner).

Hope that helps!

Okay, now I'm really confused.

I decided to start over, this time with no preconceived notions. I visited the HP site, filtered for home/business, inkjet, mutli-function and color.

Among the product selections were a number of 8600's, the 8625 and 8620 just being two that I compared.

After I'd tried the suggestions here to 'fix' our 8600 Pro ADF and searched Amazon for a replacement 8600, units were selling at 'too' high a price and by marketplace sellers vs. Amazon indicating from previous experience with other products that the 8600 line must now be discontinued. That's when I realized that HP was selling a newer model, the 8700 series.

Is the 8600 series discontinued and replaced by the 8700?

If so, why are 8600's on the HP site?

If not, I'm wondering why the prices for 8600's are out of line to the prices previously listed when I purchased our machine?
