My HP Officejet 4500 receives a print job but just keeps indicating that it's printing, but nothing happens.  The print menu indicates a mechanic error. It also stopped scanning several weeks ago, same problem...just sits on the processing screen and never scans anything.  I've tried printing a status report and again it indicates that it's printing and the power button flashes, but nothing ever happens. I have genuine HP ink cartridges installed if that matters.  Anything I can do...kinda need it to print!?!

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One Printer and it does not print and scan. The printer indicates that it is going to print but nothing happens. I read that the print menu indicates a mechanic error. Also, the printer status report did not print. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Is the printer connected via USB or wirelessly?
  • Did any other hardware changes take place on the printer (like a paper jam, etc.)?
  • Could you mention the mechanic error displayed on the printer?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector. Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

Please try to make a copy. If the printer fails to make a copy then it points towards a hardware failure. I suggest you to reset the printer. I have sent you a private message with the steps to reset the printer.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know how it goes. Cheers! 🙂
