HP Officejet 6700
Windows 8.1

My Officejet 6700 Premium is connected wirelessly to my home network.  I have a strong signal at the printer. I have a desktop and a laptop both running Windows 8.1 and a laptop running Windows 7. The the printer display ALWAYS (for over a week now) reads, "Checking device. This process might take several minutes. Do not turn off the device, do not open or close any doors.  It will print a page or two, but if the print job is over 3 pages (or i spool several one-page jobs)  it quits printing and gives me an error. My inclination is to unplug the printer to reset it and see if that fixes the problem, but the display specifically says not to do that.  I pressed the red 'X' next to the display but the display then says the checking process cannot be interrupted.  HELP!

That fixed the "Checking device..." problem!  Here is what happened:

1) When I opened the print cartridge door, the display said, "The door is opened, etc....." then when I shut the door the printer went back to "Checking device....."

2) When I touched the power button the display read, "Maintenance cannot be interrupted."  (She seemed very confident of this. Perhaps she didn't know that she could be unplugged.)

3) I unplugged the power cord from the back and from the outlet and let it sit for a couple of minutes, then plugged it into the printer, then the outlet. The printer came back on and initialized itself and then bitched at me for unplugging her: "Use the power button to turn off, do not use a power strip, etc."

Thanks!  However, it still will not print an entire document.  I tried to print five copies of a one-page doc and it printed four and a partial, then gave an error.  Any ideas with that problem?

Hi

Thanks for your email. I will try my best to assist you on your issues with your printer.

if your display keeps on prompting checking device for a week, you might want to ignore the message first.

Please try the below:

1. Open the access door (as if your going to change the ink supplies), check if the message in CGD will change to "door Open"

2. If yes, Close it and wait for a while if it can brecover.

3, if not, try to press the power button on the control panel.

4. Again check if can recover.

5. If still cannot, please try to unplug the cord of printer (from behind) and put it back and see if recover.

Please reply again for any outcome and lets see what can be done next.

Thanks and Regards

I had this issue with my 6700 as well.  I assume it was what contributed to the ink running out so fast.  I followed the instructions to update the firmware on the printer a couple of weeks ago and no longer have this issue.
