Did you solve the problem eventually? I have the error message, have rebooted, changed the cartridges which were working fine until the message came up out of nowhere (I use HP original cartridges) and it's still there, the message that is. I cleaned the contacts, still nothing. Am I going to be forced to junk this machine, or is there a fix?

I have the same problem. Have used 2 HP 95 cartridges but the error still flashes!

I gave up on this printer.  I like HP, but I spent a lot of money on that 7410 and now it is a piece of junk.  I tried to replace it with the HP Officejet 6500 and it too would not get rid of its error message.  By the way, HP site WAS NOT HELPFUL.  I now have a HP Officejet 4500.  If I have ANY problems with this one, I am changing from HP products to another manufacturer.

If I knew how to CC this message to HP, I would do so.  I do not have the time nor desire to tell them of my frustrations with them seeing as how when I did ask for help they were not helpful.

I've thrown away 3 genuine HP color print cartridges within the last year.  These cartridges all registered over half full before they failed.  I cleaned contacts, unplugged and re-plugged until my fingers bled.  Fortunately, I finally figured out the solution.  Buy a printer from a manufacturer who cares about their customers and isn't just trying to get rich on the ink revenue stream.  I've installed my last HP color cartridge.  When this cartridge fails, the printer goes in the dumpster.

The cartridges do have a warranty, typically two years from the date of manufacture.  If they were original HP cartridges and not empty or beyond the warranty period you could have gotten a replacement.   The cartridge warranty is separate from the printer warranty - it is not necessary for the printer to be in warranty to get cartridge warranty coverage.  See here for details

The Officejet 7410 is one of my all time favorite printers, when you get ready to dump it send me a private message and I will gladly pay shipping for the carcass.

I have had nothing but trouble with this $400 printer. It is poorly designed, the software is crap and never updated, it is not dependable, and it has many hardware issues like this one. My next printer is going to be a Canon, and I am going to try to stay as far away from the name, "HP", as possible - not just in printers, but in everything! A reputable company would have recalled this piece of junk.

I have just experienced this error message and gone through the steps that were suggested, to no avail. Has there been any further update on a fix for this, or do I have to return my printer?

Thank you.

WOW, I just experienced this message recently and I'm just as frustrated as everyone else.  Printer was working fine and out of the blue comes this message.  Has anyone really figured out what the problem is.  Has hp acknowledged that there is a problem.  Is there any way to override the color cartridge and just print in black ink.  I can't use the printer at all at this point.  I tried everything above.  Took out the cartridges, cleaned them.  The red ink seems to be the problem and I know there is red ink in the cartridge.  I ran the hp diagnostic on the printer and it said I had a pen problem., whatever that is.  HELP!!!
