HP Service Center was very nice and since I'd already done everything to test the scanner they were going to send me a new one. I'm just going to exchange it at the store where I bought it.

When I switch my HP Officejet 7610 Printer on the display panel shows  ! Scanner failure.

Unable to scan, copy,or send a fax.  Whats the problem?     6307

Sorry, there is no answer yet.  I've unplugged my 7610 and am using EPSON and OKIDATA printers (HEAR that HP? YOU NEED LOCAL AMERICAN SPEAKING HELP - that has technical knowledge and not just reading from the 'very lacking' manual).

I have the same problem too! I was so happy with the large format scanning before. Very upset now too!

After returning the failed scanner printer and getting a new one, I was unpacking it BRAND NEW, UNOPENED and found a handwritten note inside "scanner does not work".

Sent that one back and finally on the third try got one that works.

According to HP there is no "fix" as it is an internal failure.

Save yourself a bunch of headaches and just pack it up and get another one.

I just started to have this problem as well. Mac/Maverick set up. All worked perfectly fine yesterday.

I am now on my third 7610 because of the scanner failure.

I am now having an issue with my new 7610 that when I scan items to E-mail them the scanner reduces the image size by 40% or so. As far as I can tell there is no opption for this and I cant figure out why this is happening.

Maybe a work-around for some.  My scanner will email to the computer and passes the network test; the computer sees the HP 7610 yet when I try to scan to the computer the HP tells me to open HP software and use that which when I open the software solution center it tells me to "turn on the printer"...duh!  SO I've found that if I plug a USB thumbdrive into the HP 7610 and tell it to scan to media it will scan to the thumbdrive and the thumbdrive can be seen by my computer.

This is a really dumb way to have to scan to the computer but at least it's a way to get copies from scans.

Hope this helps some folks until HP gets it right!

I had the same error message, but luckily fluked upon a solution.

If you move the printer when the scanner is on, it will show the 'cannot scan, copy or fax' error. Turning the scanner on and off has no effect, however unplugging the power cord from the scanner, waiting, then plugging it in again fixed the error. Moving the scanner back again the wall after a successful test copy brought the error message again - and once again this silly solution worked.

I hope this helps.
