I haven't changed my printer/OS configuration at all (OS X 10.6.8 on Macbook Pro), my printer is used for light home printing, in it's lifetime it has printed maybe 300 pages.
Over time I have experienced 'odd' issues, where one day I will be printing perfectly via wi-fi, the next day my mac simply refuses to see the printer, and I have to connect and print using a cable ... this not being altogether successful every time either.
The same can be said of scanning, one day I will happily be scanning, the next day, the mac and the printer simply refuse to talk. After some troubleshooting I will then fix the problem, or just as oddly as the problem started, it will then correct itself. It's always been a bit of a hit and miss, and considering how little I actually print, it is a frustration as the printer is not exactely overworked. I've always been pleasantly surprised when any printing/scanning job goes according to plan first time round!
The latest 'sudden' problem is that the printer will NOT turn off. I have done absolutely everything suggested, plugging directly into wall socket, disconnecting for 15 minutes (have tried this numerous times, left it unplugged for a week), but no matter what, the green on-off light stays on. I've tried holding the button for a few seconds, but it just stays ON!
This 'problem' is coupled with the fact that the touchpad is completely DEAD ... and is actually how I found out the printer won't turn off.
One minute (literally) I was scanning, the next minute I tried to scan another doc, and the touchpad was blank. I immediately turned the printer off, and on reconnecting, the touchpad worked and all was fine, I scanned the doc.
When I went to scan another doc, the touchpad was blank and unresponsive again, so I thought to do the same on-off thing, but this time the printer refused to turn off, no success ... which then in turn lead me to research and troubleshooting ... and trying everything suggested ... with absolutely NO success. The green light stays ON!
As mentioned, I haven't changed any configurations, I haven't updated anything, I can still connect to my husband's Officejet 6500 (using a cable).
The only 'thing' I have done recently is change the black ink cartridge, subsequent to which I could still print. I have checked that all cartridges are correctly installed and all doors closed.
I am at my wit's end ... PLEASE HELP!

You have done everything.
Try the HP web site here still.
But it appears your printer has failed.
