RE: OFFICEJET PRO 8600 PLUS CONNECTION ISSUE--WHOEVER YOU ARE "I AM EMPLOYED BY HP, I AM SPEAKING FOR MYSELF AND NOT HP"---YOU REALLY KNOW YOUR STUFF! I HAVE HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS ALL IN ONE SINCE I BOUGHT IT 2 WEEKS AGO. I EXCHANGED THE FIRST PRODUCT BECAUSE THERE WAS AN INTERNAL DEFECT WITH THE FAX. THEN THIS PRODUCT GAVE ME TROUBLE WITH SCANNING. I HAVE BEEN ON THE PHONE WITH THE HP SUPPORT STAFF PROBABLY 20 HOURS BETWEEN THE TWO WEEKS! THEN I GOOGLED MY PROBLEM AND READ YOUR SUGGESTION. MY PRINTER ERROR WAS ALSO "DRIVE ERROR, SCAN DRIVER IS UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE PRINTER". ADDING THE PORT IN THE PRINTER PROPERTIES WAS VERY EASY TO DO WITH YOUR INSTRUCTIONS. IT SCANS GREAT NOW! WELL, THIS IS JUST THE FIRST DAY AFTER MAKING THE CHANGES. SO, I HOPE IT CONTINUES TO WORK WELL.
I CAN'T FIND ANY KUDOS STAR IN YOUR POST, BUT KUDOS, KUDOS, KUDOS TO YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

The Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is absolutely the worst printer I've ever had. It prints when it wants to, if it wants to.
I've had this obscene connection issue since day one. I've Googled wide and long for answers, but there does not seem to be any fixes or workarounds that may aliviate this problem. This printer fails with Windows XP, Linux (my computer), and Mac OSX.
I have to continuously re-install the printer qeue, which may last for a few print jobs before inexplicably loosing connectivity.
Reading the other posts, it seems that this particluar model has some serious defects in its firmware. Given the number of faulty printers torturing users everywhere, it should behove HP to have a general recall of this particular model.

I bought an 8600 Premium in mid-February and a short while later was having communications problems from several PCs on my home network to the printer. I found this and other forum posts and followed the suggestions given (make the printer default, notify ink alerts when printing only, use a static IP address, etc.). Even though the printer software says it cannot communicate with the printer, I have ALWAYS been able to get to the printer by typing its IP address into a web browser to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS). My 8600 is attached directly to my wireless router via ethernet cable, since it sits right next to it. I have not yet tried using the printer wirelessly.
For the last month, I have done quite a bit of testing and Wireshark traces, to determine the root cause. I maintained a journal of my efforts and observed results (4 pages long---too much to post here). While I have not yet nailed down the exact cause, I have determined that I only have this problem when my home network is running on my Netgear WNDR3800 dual-band wireless router. When I swap the router out for an older Linksys WRT54G or Netgear WGR614v10 and run on them for several days, I have no connectivity issues at all. Granted, the dual-band Netgear supports a broader set of configurable features than the (older) other two, but I configure all of them as close to the same as is possible.
While running on the Netgear WNDR3800, everything will work fine for the first day or so, but regardless of whether I power of a PC for the night, or leave it on, at some point during the next day, I'll get the icon in the system tray that tells me the PC is not talking to the printer, even though I can still get to the EWS via a web browser.
I just thought I would throw this bit of information out there, for anyone still struggling with a similar issue...

Admittedly, I am not a normal user. I am a networking professional, so I have an understanding of how things work that the normal user does not. My findings (pertinent to my situation) are that the printer is working fine---my problems seem likely related to the WNDR3800 router.
