I have the problem of my printer now not recognizing non-HP cartridges. I went through the process to upgrade the printer to the October firmware. I did this wirelessly. The printer seemed to upgrade itself. The screen went green and counted to 5 and then restarted itself, but the problem remains and it says the firmware is still FDP1CN1640BR. I have tried to reinstall the firmware, but the HP software will not let me select the printer to reinstall because it says it is up-to-date. I am told that the upgraded firmware is OGJP8610R164OB.
I have tried connecting my printer via USB, but the HP software still says it is up-to-date and won't let me reinstall the firmware.
What can I do to force the new firmware onto my printer?

Hi @Lymnos,

I understand you are having issues updating the firmware on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 printer. I'll be really glad to help you with this,
Press Setup on the front panel of the printer, and select Reports. In the reports, menu select Print Status report. On that report, please let me know what firmware version is listed.
Are you able to update it through the web services button on the front panel of the printer?
I have found a wonderful document which should help to resolve the issue, click here
If the issue persists, please follow these steps:
- Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.
- Restart your computer.
- Now click: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL51184/bi-124093-4/OJ8610_198.exe
- Connect the USB cable if prompted.
- Restart your computer.
- Now go to http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/OJP8610_R1640B_updated.exe to update the printer firmware.
Let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance

sabretooth04, as I mentioned, I did indeed connect my printer via USB cable and attempt to update the firmware, but it still says my printer is "up-to-date" and will not allow me to select the printer for reinstalling the firmaware.

Hi @Lymnos,
Thank you for replying,
I appreciate your time and efforts,
I see from the post that you have the HP printer connected through USB and then tried to update the firmware and still shows that the printer is up-to-date. Don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help to resolve the issue,
Let's try to perform an Advanced reset on the printer and then follow the steps to update the firmware.
I am sending you a private message with the steps to reset the printer. Please check the mailbox icon at the top-right corner of this screen.
Let me know how that goes. Good luck!
Cheers 🙂

I appreciate the help from both Jeet_singh and sabretooth04. I went through the process of uninstalling all HP software from my computer and doing the Semi-Full Reset on my printer. After resetting my computer I only connected it via USB and did not connect it to my wireless network. I followed the links Jeet_singh provide to reinstall the HP software on my computer and then to upgrade the firmware on my printer. The printer appeared to go through the firmware upgrade process (screen turned green, counted up to 5, then restarted). It once again says the firmware is FDP1CN1640BR, which is what it said when I first posted here. When I put the aftermarket cartridges in my printer it now says "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off, then on." I have turned it off/on several times, but the error remains. This is a different error than I was getting before. Before it was saying that one of the cartridges was depleted, but it would change the colors it reported as depleted. I was told by the company that I bought the cartridges from that that the reported colors changing is a sure sign that the firmware is causing the problem. I was also told that after applying the October firmware, the firmware version should be OGJP8610R164OB. Can anyone tell me if that is the correct firware I should see after applying the latest file?
I performed the reset on the printer a second time and checked the firmware before attempting to upgrade it. It says FDP1CN1640BR. So, either my printer is still not actually applying the firmware update, even over USB. Or the update I am applying is not the right one, even though it appears to be correct according to HP's site, or the reset is not downgrading the firmware.

Well, to add to my confusion ... The first time I did the semi-full reset, as reported above, it seemed to work, although I did not check the firmware version before upgrading. However, it did appear to go through the upgrade process.
Now, I have done the reset three times, and each time the firmware still reports as FDP1CN1640BR, and when I run the firmware upgrade it says my printer is up-to-date. Why in the world is the reset now not downgrading the firmware?
