you can find the files for the 8620 here:

(without netcat- you'll need to find that elsewhere- incidentally it's part of the standard Ubuntu repository)

Thanks for the firmware. I am trying to flash it in my 8620 (not Pro) and nothing is happening. Is there a different firmware for the non-Pro version?

I tried to run it but my computer does not recognize the printer in devices and printers--it just shows the fax (Is it possible HP actuall tells the computer not to recognize the printer if the ink cartridge is "damaged"?

Also, does it matter that I am network printing and doing it wireless--the port seems to have a weird set of letters/numbers.

Any help is appreciated.

Press the wireless icon on your printer touchscreen.  Use this wireless IP address to push your firmware downgrade to.  You can also ping this address to make sure you're connecting to your printer through this address.

ok--got the ip address but when i run the program, it seems to start then instantaneously stops--- I downloaded all files to a local area on computer.  Is it possible the Run file doesnt find the net file?  I am running out of patience with my complete lack of understanding of this.  thanks again for whatever help you can be.

I can confirm that downgrading the firmware from another source (sorry, you'll have to Google for it) did in fact cause the "damaged ink" messages to go away, and caused the printer to begin working as it did a week ago, before the new firmware was introduced.

To be clear and specific: the 86x0 printers downloaded a recent, new version of firmware that claimed that third party ink was "damaged"; undoing this firmware update, which can only be done by piping a hacked bit of firmware to port 9100, causes the ink to no longer be "damaged."

HP's memory is very short.

Officeworker1, I uploaded my files again to my dropbox a few hours ago which are what I used to downgrade my OfficeJet Pro 8620.  Try it again at:

Let me know if it works.  There are a few of us posting solutions.  If mine doesn't work for you try somone else.

It seems like everyone has a PC. I wish there was a Mac fix workaround!
I contacted my ink supplier and they said they are sending me new cartridges which supposedly should work. At least they responded to this issue and HP just remains silent as they know they are legally in the wrong here.
