This absolutely helped me out. I went and bought the HP brand ink and it worked perfectly. I am annoyed that its more expensive but the ink for this printer lasts me forever anyway. I am just SO HAPPY IT WASNt THE PRINTER!! Also.. Office depot took the knock off cartridges back with no reciept, so kudos to them. I will also add that I uninstalled and reinstalled the program but the firmware was changed. So the knewer G3 cartridges are working fine now. But the other cartridges worked for a short time as well before I started seeing the "damaged" error. I will keep everyone posted.

Hi,
As an ink specialist of over 15 years, I have seen the evolution of ink cartridges and I'm afraid that there are no printer manufacturers that are not manipulating the firmware to ensure that you believe that 3rd party inks are inferior and/or not allowed, for the sole purpose of gaining all the sales (monopolising).
The industry is anti-green and quite corrupt in that respect and it is down to our goverments to force them to provide a better service to their customers.
NB: 😉
Printer manufacturers will even go as far as automatically installing Online Support (a peer to peer connection) from the installation disk and then with your permission by accepting, will switch off the recognition of any cartridges not made by them.

Are there any manufacturers out there that actually build and support a decent product? I'm willing to pay twice as much for the equipment if there is. Hp products are now on my companies do not buy list. I have received zero customer service after several cordial attempts. Is there really no decent alternative?

Yes there is a hack to downgrade firmware on HP OfficeJet Pro 8610!
Some Brazilian guys posted a video on Youtube with download link to the right firmware.
I translated the manual to English so you can read it on my blog at
[Content Removed]
After doing so my cartridges were recognized again as good. and print perfectly.
The correct firmware version is FDP1CN1416AR and netcat is needed to push the firmware file farad_base_pp1_FDP1CN1416AR_nbx_signed.ful to the printer over TCP port 9100
nc.exe -w 100 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 9100 < farad_base_pp1_FDP1CN1416AR_nbx_signed.ful
(replace xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with the IP address of the printer. Warning, netcat is nowadays considered by most antivirus/security suites as malware/hacktool, so you may need to whitelist it for this purpose)
Good luck 🙂

I too just ahd this problem. I have read every single post to this forum and have determined that HP has intentionally updated firmware without notice rendering all of our "old" cartridges useless. HP and the stores will not take them back and have basically made it impossilbe to get third party ink as the mfcrs have not as yet installed the chip.
It is clearly a violation of law and I have already sought counsel willing to file a class action against HP on this issue.
There is nothing wrong with the printer--- its the software, which I believe has been intentionally changed to force consumers to purchase HP ink. I for one will not allow that to happen.
HP, I suggest in the next 24 hours that you return our ability to use the printer. the cost to you will be far less than event he legal fees attendant to the upcoming class action.
Not sure whether the geniuses at HP even monitor the site but would hope if they do, they are smart enough to get this post into the right hands.

Same exact thing here. Printer is one year old. Supposedly all 4 cartridges failed yesterday. Sounds like fraud to me and that a class-action lawsuit might be in order if it can be proven. I know one thing, I will be changing to Epson printers in all of our businesses from now on. How the mighty have fallen...

Hate to sound like a broken record but all my new cartridges apparently were "Damaged" today also. This is definitely law suit time. Unbelieveable behavior from what I used to considered to be a reasonable company!

Cartriges are not damaged and are almost full, then all of the sudden all of them do not work. We had to spend $100 on 4 new cartriges and I have 8 existing cartriges that all now do not work that I had stocked at my office which cost me an additional $200 that is now wasted. Thanks HP I will NEVER buy an HP Printer for as long as I live and I will tell everyone I get the chance to that HP doesn't care about customers and are willing to install updates that cost customers more than the printer themselves. I am looking for another printer and throwing this one in the trash to save money on ink. I am also willing to sign on to any class action lawsuit against HP.

My HP 8610 did the same today. Apparently all my generic cartridges now "appear to be damaged" and it won’t print.
What a disgraceful, underhanded and illegal stunt by HP. I have now finally had enough of their antics and will buy a different brand of printer tomorrow...... no more HP for me, not ever easily again.... no thanks !!
