Hi,
I printed out a test alignment page and all the colors printed out properly, as did the alignment. I cleaned the heads of the printer and all printed out as should be. My ink levels are showing low, but not depleted, I have about 1/4 of the black left and nearly 1/2 of the other three colors. When I try to print a picture, it is coming out partially a gradient black to purple. When I tried ot adjust to a deeper richer and best quality, the entire picture now prints out purple. I did another test page for the colors and they all come out perfectly fine. So now I am here searching for help! Thank you for any suggestions. This is a brand new printer I have had less than 4 months. It's an Office Jet Pro 6978.
Thank you!

Hi @MzB1ggz,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A very good day to you. 🙂 Hope you are doing well. 🙂 I understand that you have issues with the printer printing photos in purple. I will be delighted to assist you. 🙂
Superb assessment of the issue. Awesome diagnosis and troubleshooting as well before posting. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂 You are a privileged HP customer and we value your relationship with HP greatly. It is a genuine pleasure to share this platform with you. 🙂
First off, for better clarity and to assist you better, I would require more information regarding this.
- What application are you trying to print from?
- Have you tried a different photo app?
- Have you uninstalled and reinstalled this app and checked?
- Have you tried making copies directly from the printer to isolate the issue to not being cartridge related?
Please try these steps.
First, make a couple of copies of a specific color photograph directly from the printer.
- Steps: Please try to make a few copies directly from the printer without any intervention from the computer. Please place the required document face down on the flatbed scanner and touch the copy button. If it copies fine, then the issue could be software related.
- If it copies fine you could proceed with other troubleshooting steps.
- If it copies in purple also, then you will need to change color cartridges and check again by making a few copies of the photograph.
- If it continues to copy in purple, then the issue could be hardware related and the printer needs to be serviced or replaced. Please contact HP phone support by visiting this link: http://hp.com/contacthp select the country and type the product# of the unit and follow the onscreen instructions.
- If the color copies come out fine, then please try to print again. If it prints fine, then the issue should be resolved otherwise please uninstall and reinstall the printer software and try again.
- First, remove the print server drivers by following these steps.
- Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, type in 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click OK.
- from the Start menu or the Start screen:
- Open Devices and Printers.
- Select any printer and then click "Print server properties" at the top of the window.
- Click on the Drivers tab.
- Select the printer driver you wish to uninstall.
- Click the Remove button.
- Select "Remove driver and driver package" and click OK.
- Link to uninstall the printer software: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02259020
- Link to reinstall the full feature software: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/HP-OfficeJet-Pro-8710/8720/8730/8740-All-i...
- Try to print the snaps now. if it prints fine the issue should get resolved. Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
- Try printing from a different photo application to check if the issue is app related.
- Also, try to uninstall this specific app that you are currently using and reinstall it back again and check.
Otherwise, please visit this link for further assistance: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-OfficeJet-Pro-8710/8720/8730/8740-All-in-One-Printer-series/7...

Hi @MzB1ggz,
Thanks for the super quick reply. I reviewed the post. If the copy also copies only in black and not in color, then it is a hardware issue with the printer. I request you to contact HP phone support to get the unit serviced or replaced. Link for phone support: http://hp.com/contacthp If the unit is under warranty, then the manufacturer's warranty takes care of repairs and replacements.
Please clean the printhead and try copying in color. If it still does not copy in color then it is a hardware issue with the printer. If it copies fine, then follow the steps in my previous post to correct the issue.
