I'm having some trouble with a HP LaserJet 400 color M451dn.
All our printers are configured to A4 standard, and problem is that if a program sends a print job in Letter format, the printer stops and asks if the user wants to print anyway.
On all our other printers, Like a CP4525n I have an option called "OVERWRITE Letter/A4" which makes the device print a job in Letter format, out on a A¤ size paper.
The trouble I'm having with the HP LaserJet 400 color M451dn, is that I can't find that setting.
I have been through the settings a number of times but without any luck.
Firmware info:
Firmwaredato: 20120808
SW-ver. for Smart Install.: 07/18/2012,1.0.12200.306

I Suggest to use tray 1 instead of tray 2 to solve the problem , and to use tray two you have to modify use paper size in your application because this printer as many other model does not support override A4/Letter option which in the 4000 series

thanks for your reply, but I don't find the use of tray 1 as an usable sollution.
Tray 1 is not a "tray" but a "door" you open lays a smaller number of papir on, then in tray 2.
I don't want to permanently have tray 1 open to fix this problem, it's an unwanted source for dust in the printer.

You are totally right , just till HP provide us with firmware update to have the override Letter/A4 option in our printers,
you have just 2 ways to go:
1- modify your original document page size to be the same of your actual paper size, then you will use tray 2 without problems.
2- use the front door "tray 1" if you have no time to modify and review your documents.
I just spent 2 days trying several thing with my M401DN and that's what I got.
I'll be happy to hear that HP would respond to us and give us a permanent solution for this

I have just purchased an HP 400 M451dw (February, 2014). I run Windows 8.1. I think I have the latest driver version.
In Canada the standard letter paper size is "Letter". I have set all my programs to print on that size. I have set the printer to print on that size too, but it does not readily print. There is no paper loaded in tray 1 (which only holds 50 sheets).
The "Preferences" have paper source set at "Automatically select". Although Tray 1 is empty, when I print it does not automatically go to Tray 2 - it stops and asks me to put paper into Tray 1, which I do not want to have to do. What setting would make it automatically go to Tray 2 when Tray 1 is empty? I notice from others in this forum that this could be a driver problem.
I changed the paper source setting from "Automatically select" to "Tray 2". I have set the paper source in the printer Setup Menu to be Intermediate weight paper, size = Letter, and have loaded Tray 2 with 90lb (intermediate weight paper), letter size paper. The Side Guides and the Front Guide on Tray 2 say, "Letter". After all that, when I print it stops and says, "Load Tray 2 with "Inter A4"! It will only print on my letter size paper when I press OK on the printer panel. Why is it asking for A4 when everything else appears to be saying "Letter" size? How do I fix it?

I have found a way to solve this for the LaserJet 400 M451dw and Windows 8.1.
Changing the settings under Print>Preferences from within a program does not seem to work. Instead open:
Devices and Printers > Select the Laserjet 400 > Right Click > Select Printing Preferences. Change the Paper Size from A4 to Letter > Click Apply on the bottom right of the form. Now when you print using the default settings, it will pass Tray 1 and print on Tray 2 as it should.
I also created two Printing Shortcuts. Both use Paper size = Letter, Paper Source = Tray 2, Paper Type = Intermediate (or the setting you want), and then one says Print on both sides = Yes, the other Print on both sides = No.
Hope this works for others too!
