If I can recall correctly, you may have to select double-sided printing in two places on the printer's properties under the Devices and Printers folder.  You may also be able to access the printer's web page by typing in it's IP address in the address bar of the internet to see if duplex printing is enabled there as well.  Sorry I am not of much more assistance as I do not have access to this printer any more but let me know if I need to explain the previous instructions in more detail.  Good luck!

I've been following this thread, and several others, to see if anyone has found a solution.  I have exactly the same problem with my P1102w. I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 on an HP desktop, and using the P1102w wirelessly, since I have a couple of laptops that also print to this printer.

Manual double-sided printing used to work fine in all applications.  Then it stopped.  I don't recall making any changes before it stopped working.  I called HP and the support person told me how I could print from Word (Office 2013), since there is a print option to print double-sided manually.  This works, although the screen prompt is different from the one that used to pop up.  In this case Word is managing the printing.

The problem is that I still can't print double-sided from other applications, such as Adobe Reader or Outlook.

I called HP yesterday and the fellow I spoke with really tried to help.  He took control of my PC, installed a firmware update, installed the latest drivers, and even said a few magic words 🙂  But nothing helped.  He concluded that it's either a problem with the printer hardware (I doubt that) or with the interface between the application and the driver.  Personally I think it's a bug in the driver.

I appreciate the comment that you can open/close the printer, since I had never tried that (I tried all combinations of pushing the two buttons on the printer) and it worked.  It may not be the most elegant way to get things done, but right now that's the only option I have.

Sometimes I would print only the odd pages, reinsert the paper and then print the even pages, but that requires you to change the order of the pages before you reinsert them (unless you can tell the application to print in reverse order - I've never been able to figure that out without wasting a lot of paper).

So if HP can't figure it out I doubt that anyone can.  They want you to buy a new printer (mine went out of warranty in 2013) so I don't think they're motivated to find a solution.

Thanks to everyone for their posts.

I am facing exactly the same problem for two years since I have bought this printer. So far I don't see any useful comment from HP expert, unless this is a site that is not HP official site and whatever we are discussing here is none of HPr concern, otherwise I have to say I am very very disappointed to HP's professionalism on their own printer. So far, the only fix is like a guy said in this stream back in 2013, open the top door and close it again, that works for me even it made HP printer looked so stupid but at least it is a solution when users are driving nuts.

It's a site under hp.com but really with incentive to get volunteers like myself to post technically whatever they want so you gotta take some knowledge offered here with a grain of salt. I mean I'm just an IT person with a passion for printers and a lot of experience and even this one is a weird one.

Computers, routers, modems, models oh my god the elements that go into printing are numerous but what I will try to do is round up some more help at least. I've done this long enough to know one of the etiquettes is to let someone own a thread so you can't look at it like the "professionals" don't care but they offer me a "chance" to inquire a little deeper than you.

Pop up windows are going to be related to software and based on the frequency of this issue it doesn't get much attention. If my suggestions don't work let me see what I can do for you. It's not for HP it's for you. Give me a week. I can't guarantee an HP rep.

"Every problem has a solution". This one doesn't seems to fit, right?

After some years without decent answer from HP, now I'm considering to exchange my HP by some printer from a manufacturer that respects customers - Elgin, Xerox or Canon, perhaps?

It's all good in that sense. You'll find their forums a little lacking and I know how it is. Once one has convinced themselves of such after buying the cheapest laser jet on the entire market that the product isn't of standard you can't be convinced otherwise. But if you want help its here. Good luck in your next purchase.

Well, I've not put a gun in HP's head forcing them to put the printer at low prices.

Actually, when I choosen 1102w, I had at least two cheaper options. My mistake was to think that HP would give me superior quality products.

Once a giant player decides to provide low quality products just because they are "cheap", then the company is in bad shape. Tendency for strong companies is to not risk reputation against bad products - and that was HP did to me: they have put their reputation on the ground IMHO.

Thanks for your long (and lonely) effort - but without any positive results. May be if HP experts and technicians helped a little bit, then the problem was solved, and, as influencer, I would have something positive to say about HP to my customers.

By today, I'll just say "if you buy HP, good luck".

Perhaps, good luck to all.

Regards,

Edson

I found a solution that works.  It may have been posted somewhere, so I won't take credit for it.

It seems like extra work, but since you need to take the paper from the output tray and put it back in the input tray, it's not really inconvenient.  It's just a low-tech solution.

After the first side is printed and you've put the paper back into the input tray, just open the top of the printer as if you want to change the toner cartridge and then close it.  You don't have to open it all the way, and can close it immediately.  After doing that the printer will continue and print the second side of the pages.

Let me know if this works well for you too.

Yes, you have read on beginning of this thread. This was my own answer to the problem (open the top lid, and close again).

Point is that HP left us completely without support for years now.

Here I am three years later, the reason being that the duplex print window to manually continue has worked for me with all applications for three years --- and just recently stopped.  Go figure.  If you don't want to lift the lid and close it again, it will work if you power off the printer and immediately power it up again.

If that causes wear and tear on the printer, so be it.  When it dies, a new printer to replace this years-old printer (which has until now worked great for me) is the logical thing to do.  By the way, I have found HP printers to be the best performers over the years.  I'll stick with them.
