I switch between card stock and regular paper.  I indicate which type I'm using before printing.  My printer isn't grabbing the paper.  It tries twice, growling the whole time.  I have to force in in there.  I've cleaned the heads.  Is my printer a "gonner" or can it be fixed?

@BSWebster

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the paper is not feeding as it normally should,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Does the issue persist while printing via copier as a stand alone as well?

Which Operating system are you using with this printer?

Did you update the printer drivers and firmware?

(Click here to find and install, if you haven't)

Meanwhile, if your HP printer does not pick up or feed paper from the input tray when you do have paper loaded, and an "Out of Paper" message displays on the printer's control panel or on your computer: CLICK HERE TO VIEW A YOUTUBE VIDEO WITH A SOLUTION

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

That'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Hi, Riddle_Decipher!  Thanks for responding!

The issue persists whether I'm printing or copying.

I'm not sure which version I'm on, BUT when I try to get software updates, the HP is telling me I'm up-to-date.

I cleaned the heads.  Pickup makes a terrible grinding noise.  I have to hand feed the paper in.  It gets stuck.  I get the Out of Paper message.  I tap OK.  The paper sometimes will get pulled in.  Sometimes not.

What can I do?  Is it in need of service?

Thanks!

@BSWebster

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I recommend you perform the below steps,

Step 1: Check the condition of the paper and reload it

The type and condition of paper can affect the way your printer picks paper. The edges of low-quality paper that have absorbed moisture might curl or lift the sheet so the paper does not feed into the printer.

Step 2: Clean the rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the pick rollers and cause paper feed issues. To help prevent paper feed issues, clean the rollers inside the printer and in the duplexer (if equipped).

Step 3: Reset the printer

If the other steps in this document fail to resolve the issue, then reset the printer.

  1. Without turning the printer off, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  2. Wait 30 seconds, and then reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  3. Press the power button to turn on the printer, if it did not power on automatically.

If the issue persists, I'm afraid it does require a service and I suggest you Contact HP to have it either repaired/replacement:
